In John Knowles’ A Separate Peace, it is shown that competition negatively affects Gene and Finny’s relationship. When Gene starts to see the argumentative aspect in Finny, he can’t help but to envy him and how he finesses around his problems: “Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn’t help envying him a little, which was perfectly normal” (Knowles 25). This example shows the competitive aspect in Gene’s personality. Gene is jealous and wants to be like Finny, and this negatively affects their relationship. Gene clearly has some jealousy because he wants to be able to get out of problems like Finny does. Usually though, Finny is the one that makes Gene jealous or competitive. Another way that finny makes gene feel bad is when he challenges
In the novel A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, Gene and Finny have boarding school experiences during World War II. Finny helps Gene mature throughout the story. Finny is an archetypal Jesus because of he preaches his ideas to his peers, his death is similar to Jesus’s, and his charismatic personality.
Friendship is a necessity throughout life whether it is during elementary school or during adulthood. Some friendships may last a while and some may last for a year; it depends on the strength of the bond and trust between the two people. In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main characters, Gene and Finny, did not have a pure friendship because it was driven by envy and jealousy, they did not feel the same way towards each other and they did not accurately understand each other.
Have you ever read a book where one of the main characters was so envious of another? Well, here you have it. In John Knowles “A Separate Peace”, Gene is all for the jealous rage and resentful ways. Throughout the book, Mr. Knowles places the boys in a boarding school and sets the tale so that the reader knows all the focus is set upon Finny and Gene’s relationship. Speaking of relationships and Gene’s way, the storyline takes a turn and Finny actually ends up being almost physically pushed out of a tree. I say that shows a large characteristic of Gene. He is without a doubt, resentful towards Finny.

Shadows contain darker emotions, such as envy, anger, or hatred, that we hide from the outside world as these emotions are perceived negatively. In Gene’s shadow, jealousy rises, as he compares himself
Which personality is more successful in life, an optimist or a realist? It depends on how a person defines being successful. Optimists utilize the luxury of looking on the bright side and they are often blissfully ignorant, whereas realists take the slightly grimmer and serious path. John Knowles highlights these ideas in A Separate Peace with two of his characters, Gene Forrester and Phineas (Finny). Knowles describes Gene as an introvert and intellectual whereas Phineas is an extrovert and athletic. The two characters have different perspectives and the one is more likely to prevail. In Knowles' novel, A Separate Peace, Gene's realistic viewpoint is better suited to be successful in this world than Phineas' naïve outlook because Gene's way
Gene is a well-educated, athletic individual. He takes his school work seriously and keeps to himself, meaning he doesn’t favor standing out or being in the spotlight. He is a follower, especially when it comes to his best friend, Phineas. Throughout the book, he often compares himself to Phineas and talks about how perfect Finny is.
“Never underestimate the power of jealousy and the power of envy to destroy. Never underestimate that” ~ Oliver Stone. Jealousy and envy are dark feelings that plague the mind of the wicked; and if left to grow, it will consume the mind in a dark veil of hatred that will spark violence and maliciousness. In the book “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles two boys named Finny and Gene create a friendship built on the back of envy and jealousy. Even though the two boys look at each other with different views they both saw one thing, and that is skills they will never be able to obtain, or so they think. Just like what Oliver Stone once said “never underestimate the power of jealousy and power of envy to destroy”, ultimately Finny and Genes relationship was destroyed by their constant envy of one another. Finny and Gene’s relationship cannot be a friendship, simply because Gene is unable to like Finny.
Competition between peers makes people strive to try and be better than their opponents, and can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the competitors and their responses to the competition. Sometimes people see competition and face it head on like Gene when he is trying to become the “head of the class” (Knowles 24). It gets people to strive to be the best that they can be and whether they are successful or not they are better off than before. Even though Phineas was maimed it looked like he was going to end up getting a better educat...
Knowles wrote this book to convey the ups and downs of relationships and how it can take a turn for the worse in a matter of moments. The two main characters Gene and Finny, develop some sort of a jealousy towards each other. In this quote, “If I was head of the class and won that prize, then we would be even,”(Knowles 52), Gene feels that Finny is making an attempt to dethrone him of his role as the head of the class. However, Finny wasn’t trying to dethrone him at all. In fact Finny was trying to help his friend enjoy life a little more. This quote,“Finny had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could have been any rivalry between us,”(Knowles 51), Gene is hit with reality that Finny wasn't jealous
Doaker- A forty seven year old, tall, patient man that has a lot of respect for others. Even though he caves into people he is still a respectable figure.
Two best friends are torn apart. A man meticulously plots revenge on the person who got the job he was dying for. A nation is full of rage and fear because another country beat them in the race to walk on the moon. Sadly, all of these situations were caused by one thing, competition. In Alfie Kohn’s essay, “Competition Is Destructive”, he describes competition as having a “toxic effect on our relationships”(11). Although competition has many positive effects in this world, when talking specifically about relationships, whether it be between best friends, two strangers, or even entire nations, it fuels negative feelings and attitudes that transform people into monsters.

It was portrayed the most throughout the movie on both Edward and Jim. There are two distinct types of jealousy, reactive and suspicious. Reactive jealousy was considered as a good behavior and preferred by researchers like Attridge (2013). In the movie, Jim displayed multiple reactive jealousy towards Edward after he found out that Kim was in love with Edward. According to Swami et at., (2012), formation of jealousy is high when the perception of a partner’s value was ranked higher than their own. Jim thought that it was a waste for Kim to get together with Edward because she is out of his league. This is understandable as Jim and Kim was lovers and Jim was probably under the bias for love is blind. Besides that, the reactive jealousy that Jim had towards Edward was because he felt the physical threat of Edward taking Kim away from him. This lead to an argument that turned into a fist fight and ended with one party dead. Besides that, Jim and Kim were probably not lovers for long as Attridge (2013) argued that the longer you are in a relationship, the less suspicion you have on your partner’s infidelity. Peg and Bill portrayed that flawlessly as Bill was never concerned about Peg cheating on him even though she was spending a lot of time attending to Edward and helping him whenever he needs a helping hand. The portrayal of the relationship between Peg and Bill also supported the result from Acevedo
