The setting of the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, is set in 1942 during World War II in New England At Devon Military High School. Devon is a all boys academy were at the age 18, you were either drafted into the war with no choice or unless you were really smart and planned on being a doctor or teacher of some sort. Gene was going back to Devon, a school that he had attended 15 years ago. The school had been remodeled and completely changed from the last he had seen it and he wasn't very fond of the change, stating it looked like a museum. The boys are training to enlist into the war before they are drafted. Although during the time it is World War II and life at Devon isn't so sweet in New England. man. Many times in the story Gene felt jealous of Finny and made things very competitive between the friends. Gene at one point thought Finny was trying to get to him when they first jumped out the tree. “Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this? Finny always saw the good in Gene and cared for his best friend. Finny even trained Gene for the olympics cause he couldn’t do it himself. Gene finally realizes there wasn’t nothing he could do to prevent Finny’s death. Moral of the story is don’t let jealousy drive you to making a horrible mistake causing you to regret it and ruin another life.
As the end of the story rounds up, Gene forgave himself for what happen mentally, Sadly Gene was to distracted by his jealousy that Finny had to die for it to end. A part of Gene died when Finny died, because of his good character. Gene realized he was wrong later when he overcame his jealousy. “My fury was gone, I felt it gone”. (203) Gene was drafted into the war and said “I never killed anyone and i never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there”.
