in the short stories a Rose for Miss Emily, the Lottery and the drama Before Breakfast there is one theme they all have in common, death. People handle death in their own way some mourn for the loss of a loved one others fear death even if it’s for the benefit of others and some even take their own lives to escape a miserable life on this earth. Only by watching people and how they react to death is the only way of knowing how certain people handle death. In these three stories the author uses diction to display the human condition, shock of death.
In “a Rose for Miss Emily” by William Faulkner the shock of death was when miss Emily wouldn’t let her father leave the house after he died this is because of the shock of her father’s death pushed
her into denial Faulkner proves this in his story when he writes “Miss Emily met them at the door, dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face. She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days, with the ministers calling on her, and the doctors, trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body. Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly”. (Faulkner 98) After her father’s burial her denial of her father’s death turned into a desire for someone who wouldn’t leave her this belief set the stage for the rest of the story and killed homer and slept with the body that “apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace. (Faulkner 100) In Shirley Jacksons “the lottery” death was seen as a good thing a public event to sacrifice one for the betterment of others but when miss. Hutchison draws the card with the black dot meaning she’s the one being sacrificed she says “I think we ought to start over, Mrs. Hutchinson said, as quietly as she could. I tell you it wasn’t fair. You didn’t give him enough time to choose everyone saw that.” (Jackson 143) Jackson uses diction to show that even in a society where people give “little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles” (Jackson 144) to throw at his own mom the human emotion of shock of death sends miss Hutchison into a panic that even makes her try to get her daughters who are married to draw with her so she will have better odds to survive. In Eugene O’Neill’s drama “Before Breakfast” Alfred cuts his own throat after years of excessive drinking and constant nagging from his wife. O’Neill uses diction to show the terror Mrs. Rowland feels when she yells out “Alfred! Alfred! Answer me! What is it you knocked over? Are you still drunk? [Unable to stand the tension a second longer she rushes to the door of the bedroom] Alfred!” (O’Neill 1011) then since this is a drama he uses diction to tell us what the actor playing Mrs. Rowland is doing, after “She stands in the doorway looking down at the floor of the inner room, transfixed with horror. Then she shrieks wildly and runs to the other door, unlocks it and frenziedly pulls it open, and runs shrieking madly into the hallway.” (O’Neill 1011) this is Mrs. Rowlands reaction to the shock of death and I must admit it’s not the reaction I would expect from a woman who doesn’t seem to even care for Alfred. So in conclusion the authors use diction to display the human condition shock to show how people act when confronted with death whether it’s a daughter mourning her father, a wife and mother killed for the greater good of the community or a man who is just tired of it all and wants a way out. Death may or may not be a good thing for the person who dies but there is always one person who mourns the death of a person.
In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” the main character named Emily is a women of high status and is the gossip of the town. Emily was thirty and remained unmarried. Soon she found a Northern man named Homer Baron and was spending most of her time with him until the town didn’t see him after he stepped foot into the house of Emily. The narrator/detective revealed at the end a very disturbing attribute about what was held in Emily’s house. However, William Faulkner’s idea of a detective story is far from becoming visible as the traditions make it stand. In Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening, Edna is faced with enormous heartache and desperation that she feels she has no other choice but to take her own life. This is paralleled in The Tooth and The Lottery, two short stories by Shirley Jackson. Both stories feature a character who is met with their death at unexpected moments in their lives, but in very different situations. The event of death plays a central role in these three works.
Death is a common theme in literature. It is the end of the line on the human train of life. People have different views on death, with some fearing it and some embracing it as a passage to something else. Death can be interpreted in ways other than just loss of physical life, including loss of a loved one or even loss of sanity. Both Emily Dickinson’s poem “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain” and Ambrose Bierce’s story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” deal with the theme of death, albeit in different ways. However, they are both losing what they hold dearest to them. These two pieces of work by Dickinson and Bierce are similar in that they convey the theme of the death or something they care about.
William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily is a dreary short story told of a traditional woman surrounded by death living in an ever-changing town. Emily’s funeral is the opening paragraph in A Rose for Emily to help introduce the background of the town’s perception of the curiosity known as Emily. Faulkner introduces Emily by stating “She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallid hue.” (323) The sorrow of the main character in A Rose for Emily is illustrated by the reaffirmation of death throughout the story and how it seems to follow her in life by her resistance to change.

Concerning the contextualization of A Rose of Family as a sign of the times of women at that point, where cultural norms of women lead to a life in domestication. The recognition of the rose here as it is carefully placed in the title of the piece as well bears significance to the physical rose and what it meant to the young women in the South during the 1800s (Kurtz 40). Roses are generally given as tokens of love and affection by males to females. There are even remnants of it today where young lads also profess their love to women with roses; women still see it as an act of endearment towards them.
How would today’s society treat a situation such as Emily Grierson different from the society during the time period of the story? This a question that some will think about after reading a story such as this as well as how it will affect individuals’ lives. The residents in the strict small town of Jefferson already did not agree on how Emily was living with her lover let alone what she did to him shook them up as well. People today probably would have sympathy for Grierson knowing what she her life was like that lead to this horrific event happen.
Some changes in life are inevitable such as the aging process and death. Any day can be one’s last day walking or breathing, and for some the object of letting go of someone held for so long is tragic. It may even seem like the deceased person is still alive and everything is operating as normal or that it was all a big dream. In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose For Emily” the idea of Emily Grierson letting go of the only man she’s ever loved and cherished, in her father, leaves her torn apart. Looking to fill the fresh wound inside her heart, Emily sought desperate measures to ensure that the next man she loved would never leave her.

However, if this story is compared to the life of the author, William Faulkner, people can see how death in his life can contribute to why he wrote the story the way he did. The death of the people is used to add to the meaning of the work altogether. William Faulkner’s experiences add meaning to his work, “A Rose for Emily,” through several deaths and Emily’s ultimate demise.

The story is Faulkner's top example of the form because it contains unbelievably dark descriptions: a rotting mansion, a carcass, a massacre, a mystifying servant who disappear, and, most terrible of all, necrophilia — an erotic or sexual appeal to dead bodies. The contrast among the noble woman and her awful secrets forms the starting point of the story. Because the Griersons were held a little too high for who they really were, Miss Emily's father forbidden her from dating socially or at least the population thought so: "None of the youthful men were fairly good enough for Miss Emily."

However Emily Dickinson demonstrates that death is not the end of literature or feeling of sadness but death is a new element of inspiration in poetry and is the beginning of a new chapter in our life. In the poem ‘’Because I Could Not Stop for Death’, she discusses the encounter of a women with death, who passed away centuries ago. Dickenson uses metaphors and similes to show that the process of dying can be an enjoyable moment by appreciating the good moments in life, and by respecting death rather than fearing it. Also Dickinson portrays death in a humorous way as she compares it to man seducing her to go to her death as well, to childhood games that show the innocence of this encounter (Bloom). The poem is a reflection of how unpredictable death can be. Death is a scary process in life that should not be feared because it should be celebrate as new start.
