In the short story “A Rose for Emily,” death plays a major role in developing the story. It also shows how the death of one person can change a city as a whole. However, if this story is compared to the life of the author, William Faulkner, people can see how death in his life can contribute to why he wrote the story the way he did. The death of the people is used to add to the meaning of the work altogether. She would hold on to items from the past everybody else was letting go. She was willing, and obligated, to hold onto these items from the past when nobody else would. For example, when the townspeople travel into her house after she died, it was a mirror walking into a time portal to 40 years ago, “..there was one room in that region above stairs which no one had seen in forty years… a thin, acrid pall as of the tomb seen to lie everywhere upon this room decked and furnished as for a bridal,” all of the man 's belongings were left as well, his suit and tie, “as if they had just been removed” (369). All of them, however, can be looked at through the life of the author. William Faulkner was no stranger to death or disappointment. He suffered through many deaths, including a week old daughter. Each of Emily’s conflicts resinated William’s life. He experienced a difficult life and faced many harsh deaths. In order to overcome his situations, he would write about them. William began writing about the places and people of his childhood, developing characters based on real people he had grown up with or heard about. He would use this as a way to express his feelings so he could move past them and continue to prosper. As time went on pieces from Emily started to drift away and also the home that she confined herself to. The town grew a great deal of sympathy towards Emily, although she never hears it. She was slightly aware of the faint whispers that began when her presence was near. Gossip and whispers may have been the cause of her hideous behavior. The town couldn’t wait to pity Ms. Emily because of the way she looked down on people because she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and she never thought she would be alone the way her father left her.

Symbolism helps to indicate how Emily was once innocent but later changes, how her hair, house, and lifestyle, helped to show her resistance to change. The story is not told in chronological order. The events of her life are revealed slowly and create suspense over the telling of the story by the narrator. The narrator represents the town and its residents.
The manipulation of time by the author is there to enhance the mystery. This creates for the reader a chronological table to the story line so that they can be an active part of the story looking for future clues. Emily's fight for survival in an era where women had many obstacles to tackle, along with her personal attempts to distort time, and her insecurity to love and be loved is the central theme of the story. For the dead, a rose is placed on the grave and giving a rose is a token of love.
One of the many indications that Miss Emily is stuck in the past is her refusal to accept that her father is dead after holding on to his body for three days. “She wants to keep him as she has known him instead of allowing him to return to dust”(Kurtz 40). Miss Emily’s father had such an impact on her life, that she was left powerless in every aspect, thus her decision to live in the past where she knew she could be in control.
The author of the story does not represent main events according to chronological time, which shows the dehumanization of Emily. This is done not only to create suspense or to make the story more interesting, but because Emily’s time has not any kind of importance. The author seems to present the existence of two kinds of times in the life of a person; one is the psychological time and another is the biological time.
