To some extent I feel comfortable being a non-professional counselor. I obtain the characteristics of being a good listener and being able to empathize with others. However, I feel that my counseling skills will increase once I have more experience consoling patients and family members. Speech-language pathology and audiology are both helping professions. Consequently, it is important that the those professionals comfort the patient or family member during their time of need. If I feel that the patient or family member is having a difficult time coping with the situation then I would refer them to a professional counselor and a support
group.
I have not worked with clients in a formal counseling setting. However, I know the importance of clients taking assessments to gain a better understanding. For example, if the client is having difficulty selecting a career, I would have the client take a career assessment to determine client strengths. Then, the client can use the evaluation to research jobs that would allow the client to use their strengths.
A career path which I am considering for my future is that of a substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse counselors provide assistance and therapy to clients wishing to stop their use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. I am considering this field because of my personal experience with substance abuse and a desire to help others towards recovery, as well. In order to further understand this occupation, an acquaintance who works in the field and who possesses a similar background agreed to meet with me to discuss her career.
Over the last 100 years, the underpinning concepts in the fields of psychology and counseling were wrought. Within this period, these concepts have transformed and evolved from somewhat crude conceptions of the psyche toward more holistic interventions and approaches. As the profession continues to move forward, adaptations of the original theorists regarding the nature of man and the development of personality continue to emerge. These adaptations, along with the integration of new concepts and ideas, continue to contribute to the field. The author describes his view of man and human nature, personality development, and explores potential implications for counseling.
...ing silence, paraphrasing and reflection of feelings, as well as non-verbal skills such as body-language and active listening are all used in order to allow the client to introspect and work with their problems in a safe environment, the role of the counselor within the relationship being to support the client and help them to reach their true potential by expressing emotions and thoughts that they can’t express outside of the helping relationship, whether it be for fear of rejection or some other reason.
I have wanted to be a counselor since my freshmen year of high school and in the counseling field there are many specialties that I can focus on. I am fairly certain that I want to specialize in helping people with substance abuse and their families. I have always focused my studies, interests, and work on things that will help me in this field and I have a lot of qualities that help to enhance me in my eventual career. There are difficulties when I get to practice also like what people perceive as correct counseling style, challenges with my gender and race, and finally creating my own counseling style and plans.
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .

Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
As a future counselor, I have enjoyed learning about the different techniques and theories of counseling. Understanding each approach is important but I believe that the counselors self knowledge of her or his own values, worldviews and life philosophy is just as important for the counselor to do the job effectively. Each theory that we learned about, I could see being helpful to different people, their circumstance and individual problem. I can see myself using different parts of each in my future career. Currently, I more drawn to the Adlerian theory. I understand and agree when Adler believed that people do have the ability to monitor and control the direction of their lives. The unconscious shapes personality,

It is very important to listen and pay attention because as a Counselor you do not want to miss out on any important information that can help determine the root of the problem. I also find that being a good listener is one of my strengths as well as being compassionate, open-minded, and sympathetic. I overcame many personal hardships in my life, and because of those hardships I am a stronger person, with a positive outlook on life that can help make a difference in someone. One of my personal characteristics that I feel that I need to improve on is that I become too emotionally involved because I care about those I will work with. I want to be able to do my job without my emotions getting in the way. The best way to do that is to learn strategies and techniques to help me improve. I am willing to learn and work hard to make sure I become a qualified professional for this
In the times that we are living in the visions of Christian Counseling is more relevant and needed. In a sense to where the counseling it self is almost a dying breed. Where the conflicts between personal and group counseling can be a hit or miss with
In order for productive counseling sessions to take place, there must be clear communication and the client must be able to trust the professional. It is commonly believed that a societal diagnosis of flaw in mental health is caused or contained by the individual, rather than as a byproduct of societal systems. This type of individualism is a microaggression because not only does it victim shame, but these clients are also often encouraged to self-explore, so they themselves can “fix” their “own” problems. If a professional assumes a colorblind approach they may not be trying to completely understand the client’s identity and experiences, and may even minimizes these experiences because of unconscious racism (257). Black clients especially
2. The emphasis is on what is being done, thought, and felt at the present moment (the phenomenality of both client and counselor), rather than on what was, might be, could be, or should have been.
By introduction of guidance and counseling the government and education department officials felt that problems at school level will be decreased a lot but the atmosphere is not up to the level. Hence the study highlights on the role and importance of guidance and counseling. According to Corey (1988) regards counseling as a process which occurs in one to one relationship between an individual troubled by problems with which can’t cope with and a professional worker whose training and experiences have qualified to help others reach solution to personal needs.
