A Night at the Gala: 2010 Gala Performance
A Night at the Gala code name “Operation Dragon Fly” was a tribute to Linda Garner Miller, (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Advancement) and her thirty years of dedication to George Mason University Dance Company. The 2010 Gala Concert was composed of three main pieces one of recent choreographed in 2009; Opus 100 by Christopher D’Amboise. Other featured pieces included Strict Love by Doug Varone (1994) and Grand Duo by Jaqulyn Buglisi (2006). The combination of contemporary and modern pieces generated a memorable night. Each piece was unique choreographed to commemorate different eras. All tied into the major theme in observation of the occasion to hone Mrs. Miller.

On Wednesday, November 5th, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. the Charlotte Symphony performed seven compositions by various “maverick” composers. Halton Theatre at Central Piedmont Community College’s central campus was pack to near full capacity. The program included the Molto Allegro from Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G-Minor, Warehouse Medicine by Mason Bates, Apotheosis by Austin Wintory, Cielito Lindo a traditional Spanish copla, Oaken Sky by Chris Rogerson, Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, and the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Charlotte Symphony’s Assistant Conductor, Roger Kalia, conducted and Juan Cajero appeared as a soloist. Every company has what is known as a “signature piece,” that is, a work which expresses something about the artistic direction and the spirit of the company. For the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater that piece is Revelations. Choreographed and set to traditional music, Revelations was first performed at the Ninety-second Street YM-YWHA New York, NY., January 31, 1960. The lead dancers were Joan Derby, Minnie Marhsall, Merle Derby, Dorene Richardson, Jay Fletcher, Nathaniel Horne, and Herman Howell and the soloists were Nancy Redi and Gene Hobgood. The music was performed by the Music Masters Guild Chorus of the Harlem Branch YMCA under the direction of Frank Thomas. The piece as originally performed consisted of danced portions and music interleudes grouped under three broad headings, “Pilgrim of Sorrow,” “That Love My Jesus Gives Me,” and “Move, Members, Move.” The work was revised extensively a month after its first performance and was again given at the Ninety-second Street YM-YWHA. Revelations has been seen in every country that the company has toured and has been universally acclaimed.

The concert I attended was the Liszt, Prokofiev, and Dvořák concert at the Chicago Symphony Center. Emmanuel Krivine is a French conductor who conducted the orchestra to play Liszt’s compositions Les Préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3. Next was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 16 in the Andantino, Scherzo: Vivace, Moderato, Allegro tempestoso, the piano soloist was Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin who was accompanied by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lastly was Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88 was performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the four movements played was, Allegro con Brio, Adagio, Allegretto grazioso, and Allegro MA non troppo.

There were songs played that were written by famous jazz composers and songs played that were written by some of the performers themselves. This added to the excitement of the show.

Each musician had their own solo that kept true to the original song, but with fresh improvisation that created this incredible tune. This song has it all, swing feel, syncopation, improvisation, and enticing the rise and fall, but with a dramatic and modernized twist that just leaves you wanted more. This tune was definitely my favorite song of the night.
While the musician?s were playing, I was surprised how the audience was. Most of the audience was talking loud, drinking alcohol and eating snacks. Some audience was even clapping hands and humming along with the song. This was quite an opposite environment compared to the concerts I went to. Sometimes the audience was so loud that I could barely hear the songs. It was interesting that even though the crowd was so loud, the musicians seemed very comfortable with it. They played the song as if the audience?s voice was also part of their song. When audience was loud, they would play loud and when audience became quite, they played very soft and tender. The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.
Over Halloween weekend, Dance TCU in concert, performed at Ed Landreth Hall on the TCU campus, was a mid term showcase performed by the students in the TCU School for Classical and Contemporary Dance. The overall mood was very professional. These college level dancers performed various pieces from Giselle to video edited versions of dance to contemporary dances inspired by swing dancing. Each piece was unique and whether the style was classical or contemporary, the execution was very good. The quality of the performance was spectacular and showed all the work that everyone involved in the production has put out to perfect all the aspects of the show come together.
