I personally believe culture does not have to represent a certain race or religion only. We live in Malaysia. Being Malaysian is our culture. Living in this harmonious multicultural country is a true blessing. Our culture is also very unique as it takes shape from the combination of the three main races in our country: Malay, Chinese and Indian. A multicultural entity is formed when Chinese and Indian immigrants entered Malaysia as workers during British times. These three and other races in our country have largely contributed to what we have now in Malaysia. Malaysia can be said to be a high-context cultured country. We are proud to say that we are members of Malaysian culture.

Culture is defined in many different ways across the world because people perceive it in their own unique way and it is a matter of perception and definition. Culture is how we perceive ourselves and how the world looks at us. It is the definition of ourselves and our background, the ethics and beliefs we hold on to, and it also represents the traditions and norms that we inherit and respect. Co-culture, on the other hand is the perception of membership in a group that is a part of an encompassing culture. Co-culture can be said to be the subdivision of culture. For instance, I am a Hindu. Hinduism is a co-culture. Most Hindus share the same festivals, rituals and customs such as Diwali celebration, wedding norms, traditional clothes and many more. There are many types of co-culture that people fit into.

Hence, they always work hard until midnight and rarely care about their family especially for men. The relationship with their child had been weakening due to excessive pursuit for the achievement.
In a nutshell, every culture is unique and special in its own way. It is just how we perceive it. There is always good and bad in everything. We as an educated and evolved generation should be wise enough to accept the good part and neglect the bad side of a particular culture. That way we can keep moving forward in life with a wonderful self-identity and life principles.

Culture is defined as the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with, their world and with one another - transmitted from generation through learning. Culture is the unique way to act and think within a people from a certain place. It’s the way the people hold their beliefs, what they hold valuable, how they speak and even how they write. Culture is how people relate and act with one another within a certain space. Culture can vary from place to place such as city, state, country or continent.
Within the United States there is a huge diversity of cultures. Culture is many different things, it is a tradition, it is the values and beliefs passed down from generation to generation, and culture is the identity of any country. Culture helps to identify one cultural group from the other. Although we may live in the same country,city, or state we still differ from one another by the way we dress, our beliefs, language, traditions, music, art, food, religion, and politics.

When individuals or groups from different cultures communicate, this process is called intercultural communication. The transaction process of listening and responding to people from different cultural backgrounds can be challenging. The greater the difference in culture between two people, the greater the potential of misunderstanding and mistrust. Misunderstanding and miscommunication occur between people from different cultures because of different coding rules and cultural norms, which play a major role in shaping the patterns of interaction (Jandt, 2012).
Culture is shared. Culture is shared by a firmly large group of human beings living in organized societies and works as a linking force. Generally, common religion and language are the critical elements that largely help people share values, customs, norms and experiences.
Everyone comes from a different cultural background. Many of us though, never really stop to think about what defines our own, I, myself included. This is important to do though, so one, we can know ourselves better, but also so we can start to understand other cultures as well. Surrounding the idea of culture are the concepts of ethnicity, class, gender, age, and belief, each of which I will be reflecting upon. To begin with, we have the concept of ethnicity, not to be confused with race, as I often do.
Intercultural communication is an evolving discipline that encapsulates the interactions between individuals or groups from different backgrounds. Diversity and the need for cultural awareness are forever increasing, and this solidifies the direction in which diversity will take in the future. Intercultural communication is going to be a tremendous part of our future and as individuals it will be part of our personal, social and professional relationships.

According to Hofstede’s (1980), ‘culture is the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from another… culture in the sense, includes systems of values: and values are among the building blocks of culture.’ It is necessary to determine how culture impacts our communication behavior as culture directly influences our perception and understanding of the message that is transmitted from one party to another. People from different cultures encode and decode messages differently; this therefore increases the chances of misunderstanding. Intercultural communication refers to interactions between people whose cultural assumptions are so different that the communication between them is altered. Verderber, Verderber, & Sellnow, (2010).
Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze these three notions in situations in which intercultural communication is frequent such as : the workplace, the classroom and vacation trips.
