Domestic violence is an epidemic that unfortunately, still affects large portions of our society. It affects men, but mostly women and children. There are solutions that that can be implemented to protect the victims of domestic abuse. These services may not all be provided by one entity, but may require a collaboration of multiple providers. Empowering victims is essential in reducing this problem. The end goal is to instil self-esteem and confidence in the women, enabling them to make sound personal decisions and protect themselves .

One short term solution to protect victims of violence is community awareness and advocacy . These include programs to help reduce domestic violence, increase public awareness, and most importantly, inform victims of their options. These initiatives can take the form of town meeting, public presentations and publicity campaigns. Religious organisations and community groups because of their influence and connection with the parties they connect with; can be enlisted to spread the information. These initiatives support, strengthen, and encourage victims to seek out assistance and knowledge while reducing stigma associated with this type of violence. …show more content…

A confidential 24-hour hotline should be available for information and referrals to victims or women who are in danger of becoming victims. These hotlines will offer basic legal advice, provide options to women who want to leave their violent situations though these services will not encourage them to leave their homes. Those who chose to leave on their own accord will be referred to the nearest crisis centres, shelters and medical clinics.
