The day consisted of counting minutes and mile markers. Driving on the empty highway, away from the child that I was, to the adult I was forced to become. Every tree, every sign, every mile marker that passed by was another reminder of how fast I was approaching the one thing I had wanted every second of everyday of my life. This day I would finally become the owner of a horse, the day my dreams would come true. My naive and childish self couldn't fathom how much my life would become uprooted by this horse and this day.

His ears perked towards me and he blew a soft nicker in my direction. I slowly opened the door and approached him the with brand new halter I had bought for him. As I slipped it over his head and clasped the brass clip to the halter it all became real. We stepped out of the stall and with this single step I knew that the relationship with this horse was going to be like none I have ever had. All of the sudden, his ears perked up; he became aware of everything around him. His nostrils flaring and his eyes darted around trying to sense what had changed. It was as if he was aware of the new beginning for the both of us, as if he could sense that a door had opened for him, one that could lead to endless possibilities. Becoming an adult has nothing to do with me turning 18. Me becoming an adult happened the second my life became something more, something that changed me from the person I was, to the person I am supposed to be. “Childhood and adulthood are not factors of age, but states of mind”(Alex Shakar).
