The day consisted of counting minutes and mile markers. Driving on the empty highway, away from the child that I was, to the adult I was forced to become. Every tree, every sign, every mile marker that passed by was another reminder of how fast I was approaching the one thing I had wanted every second of everyday of my life. This day I would finally become the owner of a horse, the day my dreams would come true. My naive and childish self couldn't fathom how much my life would become uprooted by this horse and this day.
And all the sudden we were there on the bumpy rocky driveway. The entrance marked with a large sign exclaiming that you had arrived to New Vocations, Racehorse Adoption Program. A practically perfect home for thousands of

His ears perked towards me and he blew a soft nicker in my direction. I slowly opened the door and approached him the with brand new halter I had bought for him. As I slipped it over his head and clasped the brass clip to the halter it all became real. We stepped out of the stall and with this single step I knew that the relationship with this horse was going to be like none I have ever had. All of the sudden, his ears perked up; he became aware of everything around him. His nostrils flaring and his eyes darted around trying to sense what had changed. It was as if he was aware of the new beginning for the both of us, as if he could sense that a door had opened for him, one that could lead to endless possibilities. Becoming an adult has nothing to do with me turning 18. Me becoming an adult happened the second my life became something more, something that changed me from the person I was, to the person I am supposed to be. “Childhood and adulthood are not factors of age, but states of mind”(Alex Shakar).
November 14th, 2014; unknowingly the day that changed my life forever, the day I evolved from childhood to adulthood. The day where I didn’t have to just take care of myself anymore. I had accepted the responsibility of another
Indian Horse is a novel by Richard Wagamese that beautifully explores the idea of family, and what it means to have people around you that make you feel at home. The reader is bombarded with an overwhelming sense of family and betrayal in the first few pages of the novel. As Richard Wagamese continues to write, one is able to see how safe Saul Indian Horse felt with his biological family, and he also shows how lost he felt without their love when he was taken to the Residential School. The school he was brought to was drained of all consensual love the moment it was open, and continued to fill the children with horrible feelings the entire time they were there. Indian Horse was unable to really feel as though he still had family while he was in the
When individuals face obstacles in life, there is often two ways to respond to those hardships: some people choose to escape from the reality and live in an illusive world. Others choose to fight against the adversities and find a solution to solve the problems. These two ways may lead the individuals to a whole new perception. Those people who decide to escape may find themselves trapped into a worse or even disastrous situation and eventually lose all of their perceptions and hops to the world, and those who choose to fight against the obstacles may find themselves a good solution to the tragic world and turn their hopelessness into hopes. Margaret Laurence in her short story Horses of the Night discusses the idea of how individual’s responses
...-discovery which can help readers to have a better understanding of our purposes in life, along with a better understanding of ourselves. Harjo’s use of her culture and her feminist views ultimately leads to a better understanding of the horses in her life. Although the horses are different and contradict themselves, in the end the speaker loves the horses in her life all the same. Considering that every line in the stanzas begins with,“She had horses . . . ,” reinforces the speaker’s Native American identity, which Harjo wanted to continuously incorporate in her poem. Effectively labeling the horses as both loved and hated, the dichotomy between her emotions and experiences, and her reason for attempting to reconcile them, becomes clear. The speaker's life is made up of the various "horses" in her life and by uniting them, a whole sense of self can be accomplished.
Contrary to my achievements, my first tryst with horse riding wasn’t smooth sailing. Distinct images of the first day at the stable flash before my eyes every time I reflect upon my humble beginning. I was helped on to the horse by my trainer and instructed to take the reins in my hands when suddenly the horse spooked and charged towards the fence. I fell off and lay still; the
Everyone always loves a Cinderella story. There is no story as perfect as that of a plow horse and the man that saved him from slaughter. Snowman, ironically called the “Cinderella Horse”, was a huge and not so eye catching plow horse that was sold at an auction. Luckily, Harry DeLeyer was just about to leave when he looked at the slaughter truck and met eyes with the beastly plow horse. For whatever reason, Harry got out of the truck and asked the kill buyer if he would sell him. That night one of the most renowned show jumpers in history was bought for a measly $80 off the trailer of death. This story hits home with anyone who loves and cares about animals. It makes many think how could someone send such a talented animal to get butchered
Within the story entitled The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence, the audience is divulged into the sordid family life of a adolescent boy named Paul, where there are three obvious morals told through the story’s style and symbolism. Also present within The Rocking Horse Winner are elements of supernaturalism and cold harsh reality.
Most equestrians will agree that the most relaxing place to be is out in nature, with just you and your horse, with no worries in the world. The wooded cross country course and the rolling wheat field are a tranquil and quiet place to spend quality time learning about and enjoying your horse. The cross country course provides a motivating factor for eventers like no other. The wheat fields have a meditation-like feel with the quiet rustling of the plants in the soft wind.

One day the princess decided to go to the antique store to see if there was something unique that she would buy. She tried to disguise herself, because of what some of the people thought her step-sisters said about her. She put on this peach dress that had little yellow roses, wore white heals, and put on these thin velvet white gloves. Her yellow hat had a blue ribbon. She entered with poise into the carriage that was ready just for her. The horses were brown with the yellow ribbons that were decorating them with a black harness around them. The carriage had brown interior that shined; which was very relaxing to sit on. The outside the carriage had these gold designs on them. The driver took the reigns in his hand; with one motion of his hand got the horses to start galloping. On the way as the warmth of the sun came through the window of the carriage, and the smell of the sweet fragrance of the spring blooms filled the air. The princess just knew her prince was out there; as she fantasized dancing with the one she has always dreamed about. Dancing with her prince; holding her gently in his arms she knew that anything could be accomplished in life. There was so much love in his eyes destiny seemed it would happen.
Heading back towards the house, I soak in all the beauty of the surrounding landscape. There are towering groves of trees, creek beds lined with wildflowers emitting delightful fragrances, and sunsets that astound. Still, I walk cautiously. For all of nature’s beauty, trouble can still take form out here, whether it is running into a slithering snake or stumbling across a prickly thistle. Looking further into the distance, I spot the horses gracefully galloping along, their sleek manes dancing across their powerful bodies. As I pass the pond, I skip a stone across the water and I think about all the "real" stories the pond could tell of the ones that got away.
