A High School Student's Opinion of Poetry
Students’ opinions of poetry are very important to consider when planning how to cover poetry in the classroom. In this article, Jon C. Mladic and Douglas R. Pietrzak surveyed a high school creative writing class in Normal, IL (grades 10-12) about their opinions of poetry. They created an extensive survey concerning the students’ opinions and experiences with poetry as well their preferences for instruction. They also interview the teacher of the creative writing class in order to gather her opinions.
Mladic and Pietrzak found that surveying students in creative writing classes can be very useful for any class. Students stated that it was especially dificult to write on command and that the environment of the school was not particularly conducive to writing. Students that were inclined to write on their own often cited writing as a means of self-exploration and they felt as if the environment of the school was not fitting for this purpose. In this article, Mladic and Pietrzak discuss a list of possible adjustments that could be made to the classroom to help the students feel more comfortable expressing themselves through writing, but insist that a writing classroom should be individually adapted to the unique members and interests of each classroom. Poetry as a means of self-expression has a wide-range of possible uses outside the English classroom as well that can be very beneficial for students’ personal and social development.
Introduction
This study is concerned with students’ opinions and knowledge of poetry so that the teacher can best adjust the classroom atmosphere to encourage student writing and creative exploration. Poetry as a topic for high school students is full of misconceptions and stereotypes. Therefore, since high school students tend to have little exposure to poetry – especially writing it – it is very important for the teacher to be sensitive and understand the dynamics of the classroom so that they are able to inspire students to feel comfortable with poetry. Poetry can be a very powerful tool of self-expression and self-exploration for students.
Research Questions
Essentially we have one research question: What opinions do high schools students have when approaching poetry? This question, however, led to a number of other questions. How can the classroom be adjusted to best fit your approaches towards writing? What topics do you write about in poetry? What is students’ prior knowledge of poetry?

Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities; it is solely used to evoke emotive feelings in the reader in which to convey a message or story. This form of literature has a long history dating back thousands of years and is considered a literacy art form as it uses forms and conventions to evoke differentiating interpretations of words, though the use of poetic devices. Devices such as assonance, figurative language, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve a musical and memorable aspect to the poem. Poems are usually written based on the past experiences of the poet and are greatly influenced by the writer’s morals values and beliefs. Poetry regularly demonstrates and emphasises on the
My writing is my medium, to impart my values, my beliefs, my ideas, my messages, everything to you. The ability to convey such things is beautiful. But for you to discover and interpret the beauty, to mould the beauty into a new being, is the true beauty of poetry.
The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari evokes an expressionist form characterized by notions of fear and anxiety duly connected to the situation of Germany during the 1910s. Albeit released in 1919 – the time when the Weimar Republic succeeded the Second Reich, which collapsed after the defeat of Germany in the First World War, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari nevertheless delivered a strong criticism against the German war effort that time. Using a series of thought-provoking themes and symbolisms rotating around a macabre plot that consequently brings forth anxious feelings to audiences, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari stood out in...
The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. Through the countless readings this semester, I saw which writing styles I loved and which didn’t speak to me. Each day of class, I chipped away at creating my identity as a writer, and I’m grateful for the lessons that helped me shape and realize that
The three sources I have selected are all based on females. They are all of change and transformation. Two of my selections, "The Friday Everything Changed" by Anne Hart, and "Women and World War II " By Dr. Sharon, are about women’s rites of passage. The third choice, "The sun is Burning Gases (Loss of a Good Friend)" by Cathleen McFarland is about a girl growing up.
When I was about to enter kindergarten, my parents initially wanted to enroll me into an all-girls preparatory school. However, my parents changed their mind and believed that co-ed schools had better opportunities and a better way to create more diversity in our society. Some may argue that single-sex schools have been proven to have students attend and graduate from four-year universities. This then allows both respective sexes to focus on their studies rather than their appearance and physical attraction. However, single-sex schools are only going to lead to segregation and separating genders in the classroom should not be a place for it to bloom from. communication with the other sex is important to where it preps students for the real world. Though single sex and co-ed schools have both pros and cons, co-ed schools provide a more realistic portrayal of what would happen in the professional working field. Co-ed schools provide and develop social communication skills between both genders instead of one.
I am not very good at writing, or even reading poetry, which may be one of the reasons that it is my least favorite. It is honestly not a form of writing that I enjoy. I feel that it can often times be difficult to break down and understand what the writer is trying to say. I also have trouble with using some of the poetic devices; more particularly I have difficulties with properly using the devices while writing poetry. I never liked when I was assigned poetry writing projects in middle and high school because I’m not very good at it, and as a result I would almost always receive lower grades than any other type of writing assignments. Poetry is a form of writing that I have worked on over the years. I am by no means an expert poet, but I have gotten better at it. Poetry will always be a kind of writing that I can improve
Single-gender schools can helps students achieve a better education as well as a better learning environment. This form of educational institution helps students to focus on their academics without the distractions of the other gender. Historical data from Harvard University and other institutions, suggests that single-gender schools are more beneficial to a students’ education than those of co-educational schools. (David Tyack and Elizabeth Hanslot, pg.14) Co-educational schools distract students from getting the most out of their education. The students are being distracted by the other gender, due to examples such as, sexual harassment and the inappropriate appearance and dress code of students. Single-gender schools can help teachers to gear their instruction to a specific gender, rather than generalizing it to please both genders. While co-educational schools can assist students to be interactive with the other gender, single-gender schools can be more beneficial towards a students’ education.
Everyone has an opinion on the learning styles of girls and boys. Lawmakers, educators, parents, and community leaders all desire to see students succeed in the academic arena and gender schooling is on the rise in public, private, charter and magnet schools. Consequently, many parents believe single-sex classes are beneficial to learning because students are free of distractions from members of the opposite sex. Single sex classes enhance opportunities for the development and refinement of leadership skills. Students are free to compete more aggressively on a single gender competitive playing field with an abandonment of prejudice and disregard for traditional stereotypical male/female identity roles. Will the implementation of
A famous poet once said, " I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of beauty." That famous poet was known as Edgar Allan Poe and he is seen as one of the most significant writers from the romanticism era. If you think about it, Poe was right. Poetry is a creation of beauty that one reads with the heart instead of their eyes. It allows you to express yourself and inspire others. poetry is everywhere, It’s the lyrics on the radio and the plot to your favorite movie. If you have never written a poem before, then you have not lived the life from a true literary perspective. Perhaps you just don 't understand the values of writing or maybe you aren 't able to express your thoughts into words, so I 'm going to show you how you can overcome these obstacles.
Heraclitus is a Greek Philosopher who is acknowledged as one of the remote godfathers of rheology and it is a compulsion that along with his name and motto as well appears in all the books of rheology. Heraclitus resided in Ephesus at the time of 500 BC and established a policy asserting that each and everything was in the state of fluctuation or change. On the other hand Parmenides was a Greek philosopher and was also a poet, he was born in a well-known family around about 510 B.C in Italy and was considered as the major representative of the Eleatic philosophy. His fellows had great respect for him due to his superior legislation skills, for which they credited the growth and the wealth of the area. One of the best features about him was that he led an exemplary life leaving an admiration for others (The Cambridge Companion to early Greek Philosophy). He wrote subsequent to Heraclitus and was against his writings in regards to the problem of change. This essay converses about the two philosophers Heraclitus and Parmenides in regards to the problem of change. Not much is known about his life except only the time when he came in interaction with young Socrates.
Education is the main base for everyone in today’s society. There are several factors that could affect one's education. Statistics show that single sex schools have been shown to receive higher test scores than their coeducational counter-parts, therefore, one of the most important factors that could affect one's education is whether they attend a single sex or coeducational school. The separation of genders during education has been considered a great importance because it has been shown to be able to increase a student’s educational achievements and quality of his or her work. The use of single sex education has been used since the 19th century, with the common idea being that if boys and girls were separated during the school day, it would allow for fewer distractions in the classroom. To this current day, many people still believe in the use of single sex education, which is still being utilized in many areas of the United States. This issue is on a national level due to it being an issue that needs to be addressed by the whole country. In light of the increase of single-sex schools, the United States government must require schools nationwide to offer a less distracting environment without the opposite sex in all subjects, which provides each sex with greater self-confidence and higher academic success.
When we first started the poetry unit, I felt that I would hate reading and creating poetry. When I heard we had to read poetry I was very disappointed. Every other year we did poetry units, I hated it. I hated every part of it. I dreaded reading poetry and answering the questions. I mostly felt this way because I am a factual person. I always have to have one right answer. I do not like when there are more than one answer choices that are correct. Poetry always has more than one interpretation. This year, however, hearing poetry and writing my own poetry has changed my opinion on poetry. Although I still hate answering questions on the poems I love to listen to poetry and write my own poetry. But, even when you read the poems that I write they are very straightforward and there are usually no other ways to interpret it.
Therefore, creates two different environments of education. In other words, single gender schools have teaching methods which can be applied more successfully on that gender only and therefore improves the quality of education for both genders. According to ( Kirshenbaum, 2007), girls seem to prefer learning in quieter place in which they work and learn together, while boys tend to learn or prefer to learn in a place which is more competitive, louder and physically active. It shows that girls gets a higher benefit from being together especially for Mathematics and Science. They feel much more comfortable about their abilities without worrying about how they look in front of boys and have more confidence to take place and participate in class discussions, while boys have much more confidence to dominate most class discussion, thus giving no chance for girls to participate in those discussions. The major problem is that teachers often call boys more than girls in Mathematics mainly. It also shows that boys get a great benefit from attending single sex schools. It is expected that a teacher of a class of boys only could adopt a teaching method that encourages boys' abilities in discussions and debates to be more direct, straight, excited at the same time. Generally, not all boys and girls are going to be relaxed in single sex classes, it would be very violent. But offering single sex classrooms especially in public schools is the simplest innovation that can be applied to offer much better quality education and improve achievements in all educational fields. Single sex education is a much better way for both genders to get the best quality and achieve the most benefits from learning in single sexed
