The Road for a Hero Whether accidental or intentional, aspects of our lives have shown us that there is a hero inside every one of us, but the choice lies inside the beholder to act on these skills or let them remain hidden. A hero isn’t necessarily someone running around in tights with a cape, what it means to be a hero has been revolutionized by many aspects of our new society. A hero in our new society can widely be defined as someone who decides to abandon their own needs and wants in order to attempt to help others in any possible way even the tiniest. There is a great evil that has an arisen in this great country that deserves an equal opponent to help stop this evil and this is where my future lies. According to Cancer.net, Oncology is defined as the study of cancer. A doctor who specializes in treating people with cancer is called an Oncologist. Usually, an Oncologist manages care and treatment once a person is diagnosed with cancer. Within the field of oncology, there are three primary clinical disciplines: Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. A Medical Oncologist specializes in treating cancer with chemotherapy, the use of drugs to kill cancer cells, usually by stopping the cancer cells’ ability to grow and divide, or other medications. A Surgical Oncologist specializes in the removal of the tumor and surrounding tissue during an operation. A Surgical Oncologist also performs biopsies which consists of tissue removal and observation. A radiation oncologist specializes in treating cancer with radiation therapy, this is characterized as the use of high-energy x-rays or other particles to kill cancer cells (Cancer.net). All of the oncologists play a great role in the defeating of cancer but my specific place lies in the field of Surgical Oncology. Jose Baselga, a lead Physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York said, “The next 10 years are expected to usher in unprecedented advances in oncology, including molecularly driven diagnostic and therapeutic developments, whole genome sequencing that results in true precision-based medicine, survivorship care plans that address long-term quality of life concerns, and team-based, cross-disciplinary approaches to research.”(Advances in Medical). This educated guess by Dr. Baselga can lead us to believe that our education about cancer grows with every new account and new procedure that we complete. In the next decade, our understanding of Oncology will be revolutionized in the hope that it will bring us closer to our intended goal of defeating this monstrous disease. Oncology is a flourishing field that is and will be in high demand in the 21st Century because when a problem has been confirmed to be present the human task force will go to various lengths in order to find a solution. Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

All hero stories have similar experiences in their life journey. Every hero undergo growth, development, and transformation through a journey of self-discovery. According to Seger (2013), “Many of the most successful films are based on these universal stories” (para. 2). Some of these stories could be either a search, a hero, or a healing story about a specific character. In the film “Dinosaur” (2000), a young broken iguanodon named Aladar goes on an similarly astonishing journey like in the hero’s journey to become a hero to his family of lemurs and a herd of dinosaurs because of his desire to do special and great acts, pass tests and obstacles, and journey to a special world.

The Hero’s Journey is a pattern of narrative that appears in novels, storytelling, myth, and religious ritual. It was first identified by the American scholar Joseph Campbell in his book A Hero with Thousand Faces. Campbell also discussed this pattern in his interview to Bill Moyers which was later published as a book The Power of Myths. This pattern describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as The Hero, the person who goes out and achieves great deeds. Campbell detailed many stages in the Hero’s Journey, but he also summarized the pattern in three fundamental phases: Separation, Ordeal, and Return that all heroes, in spite of their sex, age, culture, or religion, have to overcome in order to reach the goal. Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, provides a good example of the Hero's Journey. This story describes the adventures of Alice, a young English girl, in Wonderland. Although she lacks some of the stages identified by Campbell, she still possesses many of them that are necessary for a Hero to be considered a Hero.
Today in the world there are many types of adventures that are closely related to the Hero’s Journey. In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, it uncovers the adventure of Christopher Boone searching for the killer of Wellington, his neighbor’s dog. Christopher ran away from Swindon, his hometown, because he discovered that his father lied about his mother’s death and that he killed Wellington. While on his adventure, Christopher encounters challenges such as talking to strangers and being followed by a police officer. Since Christopher was a person who showed symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome, a developmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to socialize with others, it causes him to have a hard time

In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return.
