Terri Allen Professor Roddy English 1302 17 October 2016 “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” In the short story, A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor her use of characterization requires you to think if the characters in the story are good or bad. The grandmother is portrayed to be a liar, manipulative, hypocritical, and selfish person. You read in the story how she is Catholic and describes herself as a good woman, a lady. She actually is not as good as she would want to believe. In the story, she chastises her family about things they are not doing right. From the start of the story, she shows her lying and manipulative ways by sneaking Pitty Sing in the car. She first tries to convince her son Bailey to go to Tennessee instead of Florida and that doesn’t work. The grandmother also lies to the kids and tell them about a plantation she had once visited that had a secret panel containing treasure. Knowing the kids would bother their parent into visiting the house furthering her manipulation to do what she wants. More lies come when she realizes she made a mistake about the location of the house but opts not to say anything. Her selfishness is shown when “the Misfit” murders her family.
