A common misconception is that the worst character trait is being mean, but being self absorbed and having a feeling of self superiority is arguably worse. In Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” the grandmother clearly shows all of these bad traits. The characterization of the grandmother adds to the meaning of the text by showing how she is selfish, manipulative, and sense of superiority ends up being the reason the whole family ended up dead. She knows that there isn’t any silver there, or a secret panel. She manipulates them by lying straight to their faces. She thinks of herself as superior to the rest of the family. She shows this attitude when she says to the misfit on the side of the road, “I know you wouldn’t shoot a lady!,” (O’Connor 45). She thinks just because she is a lady that he would spare her life after he killed the rest of her family. She thinks telling him that he comes from good people and saying that he is a good man will stop him. She dressed up to go on this car trip so if she was found dead on the side of the road then the person who found her would know she was a lady, but the misfit didn’t care if she was a lady or not. In the end, the grandmother's bad qualities cost the whole family their lives, including hers. If she wouldn’t have lied about the house then they wouldn’t have crashed and had less of a chance of meeting the misfit. Her characterization adds to the meaning of the text by showing how her negative qualities led to the end of the family
