Appearance alters people's minds and makes them believe the obvious without looking further. People's perception of another convinces them to believe their opinions and thoughts. Our true identity is buried by our actions, whether it be for better or worse. Someone who is cruel may hide his or her true identity by performing good deeds and vice versa. Appearance vs. reality is a common theme in literary works, one being the play "A Doll House" by Henrik Ibsen. The play has various characters that display the aforementioned theme such as Krogstad, whose appearance is far from his true persona. The theme is apparent in the play as well as in articles such as "The Curious Case of George: A Case Study of Criminal Career" by Paul Cromwell and Michael …show more content…

Krogstad shows criminal behavior when he commits the act of forgery and when he blackmails Nora but that does not determine that he is a cruel person since his reasoning behind his behavior is for the happiness of his children. The reason Krogstad blackmails Nora is to keep his job at the bank despite it being a minor position so he can provide for his children. Without proper income, there is no way he can he raise his kids without problems. When blackmailing Nora, all Krogstad has in mind are his kids as inferred by the quotation: "Did you and your husband think of mine [children]" (2.1.558). The quotation suggests that Nora is too busy worrying about her children, so in turn does not realize Krogstad has children of his own whom he is struggling to take care of. How can Krogstad be selfish when all he can think about are his children and their happiness? The circumstances surrounding Krogstad are reflected in "The Curious Case of George: A Case Study of Criminal Career" by Cromwell and Birzer. George, an ex-criminal has revealed his good side and the intentions he had when committing his crimes in various interviews. Linde leaves him, which indicates that a dark past may cause humans to lose themselves and make mistakes. However, we cannot call them heartless humans due to them regretting their mistakes and trying to reinvent their lives like Krogstad is trying to do. Most criminals have a reason for turning to the dark side whether it is the death of a loved one, childhood trauma, or etc. In "A Doll House", Krogstad suffered from heartbreak once Mrs. Linde left him for a wealthier man, which led him to commit forgery. Krogstad's feelings after the breakup are reflective by the quotation: "When I had lost you, I seemed to have no firm ground left under my feet. Look at me now. I am a shipwrecked man clinging to a spar" (3.1.51). Krogstad did not randomly wake up one day and decide to become a criminal. He lost a part of himself that day and his heart led him to make mistakes. Pain or heartache may be the main cause of sudden criminal actions in most cases. Howe and Skolnik explore a similar situation as Krogstad in their article "The Bootstrap Method". Their focus is on Kweisi Mfume, the president of NACCA, who was once considered a felon. When he was younger, Mfume "dropped out of school and began hanging out with the local toughs, even rolling a drunk to earn his way into a loosely knit gang" (Howe and Skolnik 55). Mfume was not always a rebellious teenager but his life changed once his mother died of cancer, which led Mfume
