In modern society, people take pride on being unique. Despite the fact that people strive to be individuals, our country is structured around social norms. In the instance of these essays, the classification of social issues act as umbrella term and can be used in a variety of different situations. The essays “Why We Crave Horror Movies”, “The Tipping Point”, and “On Self Respect” all analyze different social issues. Steven King evaluates people’s mental health and how it effects their desire to watch horror movies. “The Tipping Point”, by Malcom Gladwell studies different social issues and what made them topple to the point of being classified as epidemics. In “On Self Respect”, Joan Didion analyzes self-respect, how we obtain it, and the process of it diminishing over time. All of these essays cover different topics, but all have the same common theme of redefining social norms.
Throughout this unit, we have read sections that revolve around characters reaching their defining moment. A defining moment is an event that typically determines a point of all subsequent occurrences, or when you embrace a situation that has given you struggle. In order to reach your defining moment you have to give yourself the opportunity to come out of you shell. For example, the main character in Here's Herbie, by Mike Feder and the speaker of Two Kinds by Amy Tan both portray an event that was their defining moment.

The special event that changed my life was deciding to play basketball because basketball helped me find peace, happiness and gave me identity. Michael is the brother of Lorie and he is locked up in an insane asylum for murdering his older sister Edith. He eventually escapes and decides he wants to murder his sister Lorie. Lorie is unaware that she has an older brother because she is adopted by another family when she was an infant. On Halloween night, Lorie is babysitting and her friends are being murdered. Lorie losses everything and she had done nothing wrong. Michael blames Lorie for the situation because of her relationship to him. When I think of crime I think of an action someone has done that society sees as unfit, whether that action is justifies by the person. Most of the time people don’t really care if the person was stealing so they could feed their family or stealing so they can pay for medical bills, a crime is a crime. Although crime is unlawful there usually is an origin. Some argue that it comes from desperation, which are the usual ordinary crimes you hear on the news, others believe it comes from greed. Where does this constant state of despair come from, research points to poverty. It’s widely known that neighborhoods that struggle in poverty are more likely to be prone to crime. The greed aspect comes from people wanting to make a profit so they join organizations that revolve around crime, which would be organized crime. The greed that makes people do crime is brought by organized crime, while others firmly believe that crime comes from the desperation that poverty causes.
Norman Bates is arguably the most unforgettable character in the horror genre. His movements, voice and aura at first radiate a shy young man but transform into something more sinister as the movie Psycho (Hitchcock, USA, 1960) progresses. For example in the story “Marigolds” by Eugenia W. Coller shows a girl named Elizabeth turning from an immature girl, to a responsible women. As it states in the story “The years have taken me worlds away from that time and that place, from the dust and squalor of our lives, and from the bright thing that I destroyed in a blind, childish striking out at God knows what… For one does not have to be ignorant and poor to find that his life is as barren as the dusty yards of our town. And I too have planted marigolds.” This means that when the years past she realize that the act that she has done was very bad,

The landlady went through many phases as serial killers do, specifically the wooing phase and the totem phase. It is In the wooing phase that she captures her victims, and it is in the totem phase where she does something with them after the murder is completed. The landlady went through both phases in the story. The landlady seemed nice at first but the truth eventually, would be uncovered.
