A Defining Moment In American Horror Story: Murder House

Everyone has a defining moment in their lifetime that reveals who they are as a person and how they fit into this strange puzzle we call life. This moment could be an engaging art class that ignites a passion for design and encourages them to begin a path towards art school. For another it may be a childhood sports camp that awakened an adoration for a certain sport. My defining moment occurred one night in my room as I was discreetly watching Netflix on my iPod touch. More specifically, I was watching American Horror Story: Murder House.
As I lay there, attempting to obscure the light that radiated from the screen, I began to pay more and more attention to one character in particular, the maid. Yes, I had become infatuated with the beautiful,

red-headed maid. Once I realized this, I promptly Googled the phrase, “I think I might like a girl.” I remember the phrasing so clearly, as it was burdened with such uncertainty. The leading results were popular teen advice columns that gave tips and tricks for young men on how to approach their crush at school. I immediately recognized two dilemmas: I am not a man and my crush is merely an imaginary girl on a TV show. It was just a fictitious crush, right? There is no way that I, a virtuous Christian girl, could be queer. Just the mere thought sent my mind into a frenzy.
When I first became aware of my sexual orientation, a seed of insecurity sprouted in my skull where it grew and flourished. I was apprehensive as to how my friends and family would react to my non-heterosexuality and for years I felt as though I was an alien inside my own being. Quickly I learned that questioning yourself, no matter what the circumstance, is a crucial step towards loving yourself. Throughout the last few years people have been baffled by the quantity of self-love that I emanate. I have constantly encouraged people to explore their passions and make sure that they are living a joyous, meaningful life. I still strive to discover new things about myself everyday that allow me to piece together my own puzzle, and I would challenge everyone to do the same.
