In “Isolated by the Internet” astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, Clifford Stoll emphasizes that the Internet has become a negative influence for society. Stoll believes that the Internet aim people to deteriorate and demure away from interacting among other people; which can also lead people to become isolated in feeling stressed, lonely, and depressed. Although, critics like Stoll encourage us to not be manipulated by the Internet, it helps society to find for alternatives solutions and be socially connected with other people. The majority of students prefer studying with group of people. Thanks to the Internet it allows students to work together collaborating with ideas and knowledge at the same time. For example, last quarter in my world politics class, I send out an email with two links that helped the whole class study for the midterm. I send out a Google doc’s link that helped the class organize their notes and a Skype link to answer any questions face to face video chat over the sections that they needed help understanding. The amazing part about Google docs is that multiple classmates would edit the document at the same time. Many students found this studying method useful not because they gain better grades, but they got to meet new students on campus and allowing them to be social connected through social media. On the other hand, Stoll may argue that students may face loneliness and depression, which in reality Internet has help students meet other students and become friends. The twenty first century is the age of the “Internet” which guarantees people information at the touch of their fingertips. Intelligence of any subject can be acquired- personal or private- in a matter of seconds. This method of public privacy is practiced by numerous social networking websites, which hold personal data of its users. Facebook and Twitter have promised to engulf people with their warmth, keeping them interacted with friends, updated with trends, and connected with society. While several buy into this ruse, they neglect the undesirable effects of networking, which eventually led to depression, presenting a social paradox. The virtual relationships formed online through social networks, are intended to replace physical interaction; people become immensely socialized through a new avenue of communication and remain “connected” with friends or family. This common contact behind masked computer screens eventually becomes insufficient. Yet, people seem to be addicted to social websites resulting in a continuous, daily dependence upon these networking mediums. The more society becomes reliant on social networking, the more people become victims of isolation and depression, as these types of websites merely detach people from physical communication and significant interactions.

John Parry Barlow’s essay poses an interesting question. Is communication via the Internet as socially beneficial as face to face interactions? The quick and easy answer to the question is no. The use of the internet and all of its distractions has caused an imbalance of actual social interaction. Although Nicholas Carr’s argument about how the use of internet is causing “information loss,” there’s no doubt that the internet has become a universal tool that benefits us more than harms us.
