A Comparison of World War I Poetry

Literature and poetry are a reflection of society. The words are reflected in numerous feelings that we can almost touch and can be deeply felt in its reach. Most poets expressed their perception and emotion through their writings. Unfortunately the art and poetry describes one of the worst things that human can do to one another. The legalized murder called "war." Hence, this type of self-reflection called "poetry" has help create new fundamental ideas and values towards our society. In this essay, I will discuss the issue of the "War Poetry" during the "Great War" along with comparing and contrasting two talented renowned poets; Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) and Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967).

We tend to focus on the definition of "War Poetry" as poems that concentrated on the subject of war, which are written during a war that seems to have a noticeable influence on the poet . The crucial focus here is one war in particular: namely the First World War, which fought over the period August 1914 till November 1918. It appears as a conflict with aims that were quickly lost, sinking to a war of attrition in unbelievable conditions. It began with great elaboration with long columns of smiling soldiers parading off to war wearing dress uniform and feeling proud of themselves, fighting for their beloved country and above all, to impress their admirers. All of them were expected to be the heroes returning soon with shiny new metals pinned on their chests. Unfortunately, it did not appear that way. Instead, the war lasted years after endless tears were shed and millions upon millions of fighters and non-fighters had died. Men lived in an unhygienic hole along muddy trenches that stretched for miles and fought brutal battles over and over....
