Big or small, lies are lies. People lie on a daily basis, however, the outcomes are rarely positive. To lie is asking to be punished. This is thoroughly shown throughout the suspenseful play, Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, and the award-winning television series, How To Get Away With Murder, produced by Shonda Rhimes. Characters from both the play and television series reveal that deceitful people do not better themselves and others.
To begin, throughout the play Macbeth, deceptive people harm their own self-esteem and one lie encourages individuals to commit misdeeds. Lady Macbeth’s deceiving personality causes her to become less self-confident and leads her to her death. One night, Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk and mumbles:

Out, damned spot! out, I say!—One: two: why, then, 'tis time to do't.—Hell is murky!—Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?—Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him. (V.i. 25-28) While she sleepwalks, she relives the night of murdering the King.
The line, “Out, damned spot!” symbolizes that she wishes to wash away all her guilt. She has not confessed she took part in the King’s murder and continues to deny it. Lady Macbeth becomes paranoid with guilty conscious. She could not cope with her guilt of not telling the truth about that night, and unanticipatedly dies. Her death was enclosed as a suicide, depression, and guilt were building up inside of her due to her lies. In addition to that, Lady Macbeth’s husband, Macbeth, has gone insane since getting away with lying of the King’s death, which does not better himself as King. During the day, Macbeth discusses with his wife about his scheme to assassinate Banquo and his …show more content…
family: There’s comfort yet; they [Banquo and his family] are assailable. Then be thou jocund. Ere the bat hath flown His cloistered flight, ere to black Hecate’s summons The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums Hath run night’s yawning peal, there shall be done A deed of dreadful note. (III. ii. 41-46) After killing King Duncan, Macbeth believes he can kill more. Banquo became suspicious of him, and Macbeth assumed since he faced no punishments from hiding the fact he murdered King Duncan, he advanced to thinking it was appropriate and suitable to murder Banquo. To be brief, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth provide great examples of how being dishonest abuses a person’s dignity and pride, and telling one lie causes people’s minds to believe in values they should not. Furthermore, the television series, How to Get Away with Murder, reveals lying shatters relationships and breaks trust. Oliver ruins his intimate relationship with Connor by hiding the truth of his partner’s acceptance to Stanford Law. In the finale of season two, Oliver confesses to his partner, Connor, that he deleted the email. Then Connor argues “Everyone lies in relationships”, Oliver “No, no. I don’t. Or at least I don’t want to be someone that does” (How to Get Away with Murder). A tiny error of deleting his partner’s acceptance emails follows up to a devastating end of their relationship. Oliver is washed by guilt from lying to Connor, that he did not get an acceptance from Stanford Law. Oliver could no longer bare being the liar in their relationship, explaining to his partner, Connor, that the relationship is too unhealthy if he can get away with a lie. Moreover, Frank displays an instance of a negative outcome of being dishonest with a friend. Frank’s trust with Annalise is crushed when he continually lies of why he left. As well in the season two finale, Bonnie informs Annalise of what happened on the night Annalise got in a car accident, a flashback is shown of her husband, Sam, and Frank: ‘You’re lying, tell my you’re lying.’ [Sam] ‘I’m so sorry.’ [Frank] ‘She can never know’ [Sam] ‘No. I need to tell her.’ [Frank] ‘That’s not happening.’ [Sam] ‘She needs to know what they did!’ [Frank] ‘What you did!
What you did!’ [Sam] … ‘No. I lost my son, I can’t lose her too. You tell her, I’ll ruin you’ [Sam]... ‘You owe me’ [Sam] (How to Get Away with Murder).
Later, Annalise denies the fact, but shortly asks Bonnie, “Where is he [Frank]? He needs to go!” (How to Get Away with Murder). Frank was ordered by Annalise’s husband, Sam, to murder a young girl since Frank caused Annalise’s car crash that killed her daughter. Frank and Sam hid the truth from her. She is exposed to the truth and now Frank’s life is at risk. Annalise has lost trust in him and now is determined to end him. As was previously stated, the strong relationship between Oliver and Connor was destroyed caused by deception. And, Frank demonstrates dependency and faith from one person to another can collapse from being
dishonest. Overall, both play, Macbeth, and television series, How To Get Away With Murder, disclose that poor consequences are the outcomes of perjurers. In the play, Lady Macbeth dies from the guilt of lying that she took part in the King’s murder, and Macbeth’s mind becomes wicked, accepting that violence is acceptable considering he lied his way out of the King’s murder. As well as in the series, Oliver has confessed his lie to Connor which creates a devastating break up for the two. In addition, Annalise loses faith within Frank, on account of him hiding the truth of the car accident and why he ran from her. Overall, lies are not only lies, they create immense problems in the future. A lie may not be forgiven, but the truth is always forgiven.
The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare starts off with a noble warrior Named Macbeth that is titled thane of Glamis by his own uncle, King Duncan. Macbeth is awarded thane of Cawdor due to the switching sides of the original title holder who is hanged for treason. Macbeth who is deceived by his wife kills the king in a plot for power and they put the blame on the guards by laying bloody daggers next to them. Macbeth begins to lose himself as the play goes on. He kills his best friend Banquo and Macduff’s wife and kids. Lady Macbeth kills herself as she goes crazy from all the killings and then that is when Macbeth completely loses himself. Macbeth is told by the witches that he cannot be killed by any one of women born. Macduff and Malcolm, heir to the throne who fled Scotland think of a plan to kill Macbeth. Macbeth faces Macduff and Malcolm’s army alone as he is labeled a tyrant and is abandoned by everyone. He faces the army fearlessly as he cannot killed by any one of woman born but fails to realize that Macduff was born of C-section leading to his downfall and Macbeth is Beheaded. Malcolm becomes the new king. Lady Macbeth's deception had a dramatic effect on the play leading to a dramatic change in many lives. The three main points that will be discussed are how Lady Macbeth becomes deceived; how Lady Macbeth deceives others and the results from Lady Macbeth deceiving others. Lady Macbeth, was simply minded and became easily deceived.
Why is that money and power can changes an individual’s personality? Well, when some humans see something desirable and valuable that doesn’t belong to them, they will go to a great extent to have it. Whether, that is stealing, lying or even killing loved ones. This is simply described as greed. Greed and ambition is a common theme in both Shakespeare’s tragic play, Macbeth and the movie “A Simple Plan”. They both share the concept of wanting something and committing crime after crime to achieve it. Similarly, the main characters in both stories become greedy after finding something valuable and their spouse encourages them further. Once in control, the main characters are willing to do anything to keep possession, even if it means to kill love ones.
In understanding the art form of expression in various ways like music and play writes, it brings together this sense of self identity that the artist wants to fulfill. Having this understanding about the life behind the scene, screen, and/or stage. My paper will present two art forms music by 50 cent “Many Men” and William Shakespeare play “Macbeth” in which I will describe similarities among the characters. My four categories for 50 cent and Macbeth are as follow Greed, Savage, Survivor and Success.
What happens when people have to face their pasts in order to live in the present? Authors Toni Morrison, William Shakespeare, and Markus Zusak give different examples of characters facing their pasts in their books Beloved, Macbeth, and The Book Thief. Morrison does this by using a ghost to represent characters past mistakes, Shakespeare does this by plaguing his characters with ghosts and choices to make based on a prophecy, and Zusak does this by making Liesel face her fear of abandonment. In Toni Morrison’s Beloved, characters are forced to deal with their pasts when a young woman named Beloved comes to stay with them.
A quote which really defines Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s ambition regarding power is “Power does not corrupt men; fools; however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power” George Bernard Shaw. Lady Macbeth is more ambitious in terms of gaining power then Macbeth is and that Lady Macbeth will do almost anything to gain power, even evil things that she normally wouldn’t do. This is shown when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth learn about the witches’ predictions, then roles in the plans to murder king Duncan in order to gain power and then finally after the murder, Macbeth doesn’t want to finish the plan making Lady Macbeth angry and causing a chance they might get caught and gain no power at all.
When looking back on the recent decades or even last week, it is not difficult to find a Macbeth-like figure in mainstream American culture. In this it is meant that these individuals experience a downfall in an attempt to gain power. One such figure was former President Richard Nixon.
Deception is used throughout the play by most every character. Macbeth deceives Duncan, the people of Scotland, and his friend Banquo. Lady Macbeth uses deceit to murder Duncan, and later tries to deceive herself. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth get tangled in their lies and deception. Lady Macbeth commits suicide at the end of the play because she cannot bear the grief anymore. The witches deceitfulness leads to Macbeth’s down fall, and throughout the play, deception caused lots of senseless tragedy.
This is a play about the bad ending that happens to those who are greedy for power. Macbeth may be good at war, but his knowledge of violence would not make him a good king. But how did a courageous man become so greedy for power over the people? His one big mistake was to believe in lies, a prophecy told by very weird-looking ladies. His second mistake was to begin lying to everyone and to keep faithful to a silly prophecy. His third mistake was to think that there was no way that to make his way to the top. But Shakespeare, like all famous authors, make things very complicated in the story. He shows there is a perfect place for lying without punishment, for those who still would like to use deception and duplicity after the scary consequences of this play. It is dramatic irony when Shakespeare shows Macbeth got the bad ending he deserved after believing in lies and becoming a liar himself, but the whole story of Macbeth is a lie! Like in Macbeth’s soliloquy in Act 5, this is a “tale full of sound and fury”, but definitely...
Macbeth: Shakespeare's Comparisons and Contrasts. Throughout Macbeth Shakespeare uses comparison and contrast to bring out characteristics of his main character, Macbeth. Shakespeare uses comparisons with Duncan, Lady Macbeth, and Banquo to bring out aspects of Macbeth's character. After hearing of Macbeth's courageousness on the battlefield, Duncan, a good and honest king, bestows the title of Cawdor on Macbeth.
There were several aspects of Shakespeare’s novel ‘Macbeth’ that led to the downfall of Lady Macbeth. The mentality of Lady Macbeth in the play changes dramatically from the wife a Noble General, to an evil aggressive murderer (brought upon by the witches predictions), and finally a woman who had de-graded to such an extent that she took her own life.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth tells the story of a general who commits regicide in order to become king. Early in the play, Macbeth is conflicted as to weather or not he wants to kill his kinsman the king. In the first two acts Macbeth is not portrayed as a ruthless killer; he is a sympathetic character who succumbs to the provocation of his wife and a prophecy foretold by three mysterious witches. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative, immoral woman. Her ambition is so strong that she is willing to do anything to see her husband succeed. However, in the third act things begin to change. The death of the king and lord and lady Macbeth’s rise to power catalyze profound transformation in their personalities.
...can presume that it was out of guilt. As we saw, it was plaguing her dreams, and taking a heavy toll on her mental health. The reader can assume that she saw death as the only opportunity for peace of mind. Lady Macbeth committed the ultimate crime, and this is how she payed the price.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, first published in 1606, is an endearing tale outlining the dangers of unchecked ambition and moral betrayal. In the subsequent centuries after first being performed, Macbeth's critics have been divided upon whether Macbeth himself was irrevocably evil, or if he was guided by the manipulation and actions of the women in the play to his ultimate demise. Although Lady Macbeth and the witches were influential with their provocations in the opening acts, it is ultimately Macbeth’s inherent immorality and his vaulting ambition, that resulted in the tragic downfall. It was Macbeth’s desire for power that abolished his loyalty and trustworthiness and led him down a path of murder. It is evident through his actions and words throughout the play as to how he led himself through a path of betrayal leading to his inescapable demise.
Have you ever heard the expression, “Actions speak louder than words”? This expression means that although someone might say one idea, if their actions do not correspond with that ideal then what they say does not mean anything. People like to express their opinions and views through their conversations with others. Ideally their actions would agree with their ideas and opinions about what they choose to do in different situations. However, this is not always the cause which can be observed in William Shakespeare’s, Macbeth, and in Chinua Achebe’s, Things Fall Apart. Although Macbeth and Okonkwo begin with honorable intentions, Macbeth degrades while Okonkwo keeps his honor and stays true to his ideals.
He killed her. He killed my beautiful daughter. So I'll kill him. I see something inside of him snap as Dad advances to Josh and, with one blow to the head, kills him. He yells at me to clean up the mess and that it's all my fault, it should have been me, Kate was always better then me, but I wasn't even there.
