I initially developed an interest in fashion through costume and dress, as a member in the campus-based modeling organization on my undergraduate level. There I was exposed to several disciplines in fashion; all which strengthened and intensified my passion for the field of fashion. I was in an environment that supported creative expression, providing me with a new and different perspective on clothing as decoration. Though the group’s endeavors were collective efforts, individual growth in our creative processes was still encouraged. I took the initiative to showcase my creative skills in visual display with image and fashion presentations whenever possible, which led to my election to the board position as coordinator. I was responsible for coaching and mentoring fellow members in runway modeling and fashion show production. My success in this position extended well beyond the campus as I was asked to plan and coordinate fashion shows for retail stores, boutiques and other organizations at neighboring campuses. However, complications stemming from an illness as a youth would have me confined to bed rest or seeking medical care at unexpected times. I was forced to return my focus solely on completing my undergraduate studies and afterwards I took employment in social services and education. After encouragement and support from family, I decided to pursue graduate level studies, and I was accepted into a graduate program in Communications at Texas Southern University. However, my interest in fashion had not wavered and within a year, I founded a modeling group at the campus. Urban youth are provoked to live beyond their means thus instituting a false sense of entitlement and attainment of property. The representation of fashion then becomes a counterproductive social activity. In reaction, it is essential persons better understand how an image resonates within a complex set of contexts, processes and uses, not just an image in and of itself, through ongoing intellectual, cultural and critical inquiries in the various disciplines of fashion. Fashion is a constantly changing industry; what is trendy one day is outdated the next. The 21st century has been a catalyst for a large movement in fashion. Paris, New York, and London are some of the main contributors to the fashion industry (“Fashion Capitals”). Along with being the main influences in fashion, they have significantly connected the world on a global level. Even on a local level, students and young adults indulge in fashion as a way to express themselves. Some people may argue that fashion helps express one’s imagination; however, fashion has become one of the major influences that promotes an unrealistic image of women that is detrimental to their bodies. This unrealistic image can lead to health problems, a negative body image, and a society based on appearances which is disadvantageous to our culture as a whole.
To summarize, fashion is just another outlet through which we can view our ever changing world. It is just as important as literature, cinema, and other means of creative expression that document history. However, fashion plays an even bigger role than most other art forms because it can shape the identity of a generation. Similarly, the clothes you wear can tell a story about who you are and your part in shaping a culture. In history class we often view historical events and facts so objectively that we forget that the people we read about had their own colorful culture as we do. Observing fashion and fashion history, ultimately, breathe life into the past and help us to understand how we operate as a society.

However, as technology and new methods of production, such as industrial machines rapidly changed throughout the second half of the 20th century, the arduous tasks of creating haute couture garments and its demand diminished, leaving ready to wear to control the fashion industry. Nevertheless, haute couture will always be the paragon of skilled craftsmanship and tailoring that has influenced the consumption, production and dissemination of fashion since its establishment.

The fashion industry provides both creative and business-oriented positions, making the fashion world interesting. Fashion moves in cycles, and many, especially those who work within the industry, describe fashion as very fickle. When it comes to people one might work within the industry, fashion attracts eccentric, creative people who are often very difficult to work for and with, and those within the fashion world can be very brutal and backstabbing. Fashion, psychology and the sociological perspective have long been perceived as mutually exclusive concepts. However, is there a possibility that a trinity exists in the former? To illustrate, it is evident that throughout history fashion has influenced society as a whole and has mirrored its aspects i.e. economical and sociological. Clothing is something that defines a person, and allows society to have an outlook on an individual’s lifestyle and beliefs. Unlike criticizing other material things like a car, a home or even something as simple as a television set, criticism of clothing is very personal. This suggests that there is a high correlation between clothing and personal identity and values. (Breward, pg.1) Clothing in a sense has the ability to communicate thought. However, similarly to art interpretations, this does not mean that any two people will perceive these visual aesthetics similarly.
To begin with, I shall look at what fashion is; it is a currently popular style or practice involving clothing, footwear or accessories. It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion is seen to originate from the Western world and it is copied by other places. In this paper, we shall look at how fashion affects lifestyles and the group of people who are affected most. The paper further investigates how media is used to transmit fashion from one region to the other. Although it has been seen to affect people’s lives many people have different perspectives on fashion and dressing.
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. There are many different ways today that I can keep up with what is going on in the fashion world without going to school, but school will prepare me for the challenges that are to come. The only previous work experience that I had working in a fashion was at Mortal Kombat. I did not stay at the job very long because of personal issues that I had with staff. I feel that I need to get involved in some type of fashion job so that I can network better. Networking is essential in the fashion business, because you may never see people that you want to talk to but word-of-mouth can open doors that lead you in the direction that you wanted to go.
Fashion is a controversial issue in society nowadays. We live in a consumerism advanced era in which whether following fashion trends or not has become a debatable point. Many people believe that it is important to follow fashion trends. For example, Lord Chesterfield once said, “If you are not in fashion, you are nobody.” The question is why fashion should be an essential matter of concern to all of us.
