99 Cent Only Business Strategy v. The Competition
David Gold, founder and CEO says the 99 Cent strategy is “to create the shortest path possible between the customer and the sale” (Rae-Dupree, 2004). This is important in deep discount retail in order to purchase close-out and other special-situation merchandise at prices substantially below wholesale that sell at prices significantly below regular retail (Symplicity, 2005).
Over the past two years, the company has suffered a $17.00/share loss on its stock (from $30 to $13.00) mainly due to declining operating margins (Domash, 2004) caused by over-optimism in the Texas market. Competitors were more deeply entrenched than their research had shown, and reduced earnings forecasts combined with declining operating margins were the sell signal for many investors in the company. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 of that will stay local compared to $43 if spent at a “big box store”. Even though people believe that local businesses are not as beneficial as a big box store, buying locally not only benefits the business but also the community because buying locally builds a strong community and the money you spend at a local business gets put back into the community.

The fact that there were people of color gaining recognition for their music and making the style popular was pretty much unheard of before the 1920's. This sensual style of music created a speakeasy culture and new way of dance. America's well-known dances like the "Charleston," were made popular at this time. A lot of people were offended by this style of entertainment because they thought it looked and sounded vulgar and was much too sexual to be appropriate. This meant that all of the people who enjoyed this style of music and dance were labeled as trashy and said to have not class.
