The Technology and the Future of Work Panel featured five talented individuals on their research and understanding of the importance of the growing technology on the new generation of workers. Many of the presenters talked about their views on how technology is expanding the definition of work and how technology can be used as a solution to many of the problems these new generation of workers face.
We cannot blame modernity for unfiltered and unprofessional behavior; the Internet can be blamed for poor conduct, and impulsive behavior. It makes sure that behaviors are discoverable to the public domain thanks to the multiple repositories like the cloud, smart phones, and tablets. Furthermore, it blurs the fine line between off-duty activities, in many occupational settings in the workplace. The inharmonious storm of the digital world in the workplace results to consequences that are applicable to employees, and employers in labor laws (Herbert, 2013).

Technology is beneficial, but can also become an inescapable distraction in our lives. It is important to view technology as having the ability to make our lives better or worse, yet also as having the ability to change our personal lives and behavioral patterns.

In my personal opinion about this very datable topic, “Does Increased Dependence on Laptops, Cell Phones, and PDAs Hurt Employee Productivity?” is that I believe it does hurt the employee productivity. I feel that if the usage of our cell phones, laptops, and other PDAs at work are to be reduced, it will make the employees focus more on their work. Most employees argue that they are taking notes during meetings and are recording the conversations; however, I question if that is what they are really doing. In the last few years, many of us have witnessed the rise in technologies. From cell phones being big, bulky blocks to cell phones being touch screen, and fit nicely in our pockets. I am no one to say that technology does not produce efficiency.
The smartphone is not only a phone but a computer itself which allows us to access social media sites and the internet whenever it is convenient for us. In 2011 the smartphone companies sold over one million of these devices, which means that four out of every ten people have a smartphone. Us as human beings are social animals and we crave the need and sense of communication and the technology based smartphone just intensifies that craving. (Bousaid) But, what are we really doing to ourselves when we are constantly worried about our smartphones? We have went from a world of in person communication to always wanting to communicate through our smartphones, but this is destroying our ability to communicate with other human beings in a face-to-face conversation. But, our communication styles are not the only thing that is suffering from the newest technology. In an education based field, children are becoming more distracted and distant causing a decrease in the learning that is being done (Bousaid). NBC News reports, “people who are interrupted by technology score 20 percent lower on a standard cognition test. A second demonstrated that some students, even when on their best behavior, can 't concentrate on homework for more than two minutes without distracting themselves by using social media or writing an email”(Sullivan). In the career field the smartphone 1 also hurts the productivity that is being done, research has been conducted that shows that only eleven minutes of work can be done before the employee becomes distracted by their smartphone, which means that these employees are constantly distracted by their smartphones. Over the last sixty years of business activity, there has been new ways and means of conducting business through something we call technology. Technology is the advancement and use of electronic devices and other high-tech equipment to produce and progress knowledge into the future. Advancements in technology have affected management leadership in many ways over the last sixty years. New technology has altered leaders’ consciousness, language, and the way they view their organization. Technological advancements have made things easier for those in management leadership roles. But as with anything, there are positive and negative aspects of technology on leadership. Some of the positive aspects of technology are: the availability and use of wireless networking, collaboration tools, digital video, handheld devices, and videoconferencing. On the other hand, the negative aspects of technology are: it offers less privacy, it allows for less interaction with others, and it runs a high risk of contact with viruses.
The work place has changed through the course of the centuries. Technology and globalization are the causes of the change in the workplace in the twenty-first century. Who does what work, when, and how will continue to evolve as technology becomes increasingly more advanced and communication across the globe becomes more seamless.
In Today’s world, the composition and how work is done has massively changed and is still continuing to change. Work is now more complex, more team base, depends greatly on technological and social skills and lastly more mobile and does not depend on geography. Companies are also opting for ways to help their employees perform their duties effectively so that huge profits are realized in the long term .The changes in the workplaces include Reduction in the structure of the hierarchy ,breakdown in the organization boundaries , improved and better management tactics and perspectives and lastly better workplace condition and health to the employees. As the world today is changing, the dynamics of the workplace is also changing. Trends that was once seen 50 years ago are now dying down as millennials are entering the workplace. The idea of cubicles in the workplace are changing to include collaboration space for employees to focus more on teamwork over individual performance. The use of technology at work has changed the idea of how work gets done by using many automated services, but also giving employees the opportunity to telecommute or work from home. Many companies are doing away with formal business attire and relying more on business casual or just casual appropriate dress for the workplace (Davis, 2017). Technology is one of the principal driving forces of the future; it is transforming our lives and shaping our future at rates unprecedented in history, with profound implications, which we cannot even begin to see or understand.
Computers are forever present in the workplace. Word processors-computer software packages that simplify the creational and modification of documents-have largely replaced the typewriter. Electronic mail has made it easy to send messages worldwide via computer communication networks. Office automation has become the term for linking workstations, printers, database system, and other tools by means of a local-area network. An eventual goal of office automation has been termed the 'paperless office.' Although such changes ultimately make office work much more efficient, they have not been without cost in terms of purchasing and frequently upgrading the necessary hardware and software and of training workers to use the new technology.
