For the movie analysis, I chose the movie “300” which deals with the one of the most famous battle of Thermopylae during the Greek Persian wars. The story is based on 300 Spartan men who sets out to defend their land from the Persian army. King Leonidas is the leader of Sparta, a state inside of Greece. The Persian empire began a crazy bloodshed war where they started invading all nations. The turning point of the movie is when king Leonidas kills the messenger who threatened the king to surrender in front of the Persian empire. This event creates a bad relationship between the Persians and the Spartans. As the 300 men started preparing to defend the Persians, a physically handicapped man asks if he could join the team, but the king refused due to his physical conditions. The deformed character was named Ephialte, who later joined the Persian army and informed them about the Spartans whereabouts in return of gold, women and for fame. Though the Spartans made a huge impact, killing thousands of Persian army men by strategizing such as building a wall of dead Persian bodies and intricate Spartan battle formations. One writer stated, “Disciplined by their education, the boys were also supervised by an older man. They could also be disciplined by any Spartan adult. Male children were removed from their mothers at 7 and brought up roughly, made to go barefoot, wear only a single cloak, kept hungry, encouraged to steal food but whipped if they got caught, older boys could whip younger ones for delinquency.”(Cartledge, 2001) I think this way of life played a huge role in how Spartans men were brought up and the mentality they acquired.
