Popular culture always has been transporting people back in time, replicating the history. It is necessary to examine a movie in depth to make a connection between history and fictional storyline in films. The most recent example of this is the movie 300: Rise of an Empire. I attended the movie theater recently to see how historically accurate or inaccurate the movie was compared to original historical events. The movie's storyline takes places in the ancient city-state of Athens and the Persian Empire. The battle between two nations gets heated up when the warrior Themistocles of Athens kills Persian king Darius. As far as the story goes, this event provoked the son of Darius, Xerses to get revenge. He turned into a mighty God-king. He was powerful and scary visually, which made everyone obey him, accept his sister Artemisia, who led the army instead of Xerses.

Since the days of mythological origin to the origin of pop culture, various mythological stories have been adopted and presented to newer generations. Some of these presented adaptations of mythological stories have significantly been modified in order to be deemed entertaining by audiences in a pop culture generation. Thus, my study will seek to compare mythological hero's during their time to how they have been depicted in modern day. Moreover, my study will analyze the similarities and differences between the Greek hero Heracles and his replica character, Hercules, depicted in Disney's adaptation of this myth. Although there are few similarities between the two versions, the differences between Heracles and Disney's Hercules are prominent. These differences help modern day audiences relate more easily to the characters in the story. Furthermore, the alterations have enabled a new aspect of heroism to emerge since Disney tailors it's movies towards youth who can seek valuable lessons from animated movies. Disney's choices through these alterations will be determined by focusing on the main plot, characters presented in the movie, peripheral details, and the notion of being a "true hero" that Disney presents.

The legend of Hercules has been told and retold thousands of times; it is by far one of the best known Greek myths of all time. In fact, it was so well known that Disney made it into a movie. Like any story that’s adapted into a movie there are some differences and similarities between the myth and the movie. This paper will go over the main differences and similarities between the two versions of the same myth.

Even though Alexander III of Macedonia, more commonly known as Alexander the Great, only lived to be 32 years old, his accomplishments were so vast it would be impossible to capture them all in a 3-hour Hollywood film. The well-known director, Oliver Stone, spent years studying Alexander and dreaming of making an epic film about his life. Stone's 2004 film, Alexander, was met with reviews that made it sound as if it was mediocre or disappointing, but the problem with it is that in the era of exciting action-driven Hollywood films, Alexander asks viewers to go deeper than they are accustomed. The length of the film was considered too long, but the history of Alexander is so huge that it is actually too short. Since Alexander lived more than 2300 years ago, and much of the information on Alexander's life has been lost over time, it seems to me that Alexander accurately depicts the historical era, Alexander's relationships, battle scenes and the different cultures involved in Alexander's conquests.
The Last Legion is an intriguing fantasy film based on a novel, which holds the same name, by Valerio Massimo. The movie is based on events from the Fifth Century that tie the last Roman Emperor and the fall of Rome, into the legends of the Ninth Legion and King Arthur. The movie is somewhat based off of historical facts and makes a slightly plausible story line; however, the further someone would look into history, the more they would find the movie to be Hollywood fantasy. In the first paragraph, descriptions of the cinemas’ account of Romulus Augustus becoming Emperor of Rome, the fall of Rome to the Goths, and then the exile of Romulus compared to the historical account will be found. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is much like a moral tale due to, that the movie shows the principles of right and wrong. Which conforms the standards of behaviours and the characters on those principles. Some characters are non-human (by our standards) which could be loosely perceived as talking animals, another common theme among moral tales. The movie also teaches morals that are imbedded psychologically which every watcher can understand in their own way. Morals are different in different ways in every person which is what makes Star Wars: The Force Awakens a fairly great moral tale since almost any viewer can relate in some shape or form to the movie and its characters.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a new beggining to the franchise, bringing a fresh start for old and new viewers. When Disney acquired rights, many fans were furious and many believed the series would be ruined. J.J. Abrams proved them otherwise.
Films have always been used to bring out various cultural artifacts and traditions. Through film, it would be easier for one to point out the culture in which one or the main character belongs to. The Iliad and Troy remains to be amongst the most renowned literal and film pieces that have been read, viewed and appreciated throughout history. Just as is the film Troy, which is based on the epic, The Iliad, Gladiator is a 2000 British–American epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott. The Gladiator features the character of Crowe, a fictional character, who is very loyal to Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius. Crowe is betrayed when Commodus, a very ambitious son to the then the emperor Marcus Aurelius takes over power after killing his father.
The omission of the Gods from the movie may give the audience a chance to view the characters more believable, however by omitting the Gods, the viewer did not get the full history of the characters. Possibly the only reason Thetis was in the movie was because she was the main reason Achilles decided to fight in the war against the Trojans. In both the book and the movie, it was Thetis who told Achilles that if he fought in the war, he would die young, but his name would live on for thousands of years. This seemed to be the theme throughout the movie and the book. I didn't think the movie gave enough background information on Price Paris and Helen of Sparta.
Adaptation of any kind has been a debate for many years. The debate on cinematic adaptations of literary works was for many years dominated by the questions of fidelity to the source and by the tendencies to prioritize the literary originals over their film versions (Whelehan, 2006). In the transference of a story from one form to another, there is the basic question of adherence to the source, of what can be lost (Stibetiu, 2001). There is also the question of what the filmmakers are being faithful to or is it the novel’s plot in every detail or the spirit of the original (Smith, 2016). These are only few query on the issue of fidelity in the film adaptation.
