Symbols in 1984 Oppression from the government leads people to rebel. In George Orwell’s 1984, main characters, Julia and Winston, experience this first hand. The totalitarian society that they live in tries to corrupt them but proves unsuccessful. Throughout the novel, Julia and Winston encounter challenges that bring to the surface some symbols that represent the past, the injustice from the government, and the rebellion against the Party. The glass paper weight that Winston purchases in Mr. Charrington’s shop represents the perfect world that no longer exists. Citizens can not turn off the telescreens because they are used to send information to the citizens while simultaneously monitoring their every move. The telescreens represent another example of the oppression from the government and the totalitarian society that the Party has created. Citizens can not do anything without the Party knowing about it. The telescreens prevent any chance of private activities and the thought police prevent any chance of private thinking. This causes Winston and Julia to always be aware of their surroundings and to monitor what they say. The Party abuses their power to spy on their own citizens. This invasion of privacy ultimately leads to the capture and torture of Winston and Julia. Throughout the novel, Winston refers to “the place where there is no darkness”. This place first comes to Winston in a dream when he plans to meet O’Brien. Later, the reader discovers that Orwell was foreshadowing when mentioning this place because Winston eventually ends up there. “The place where there is no darkness” is a room of telescreens in the Ministry of Love where the Party sends thought criminals to force them to love Big Brother.
