Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew, and the modern film, 10 Things I Hate About You, are more alike than they seem. The characters and their motives match almost perfectly in the play and film. Similar philosophies are used in both works as well and the basic principles of The Taming of the Shrew are still relevant today. When you read the play, it seems as though a story like that wouldn't make sense in a modern setting. However, the film still reflects the important parts of the play, only presented differently. Because of this, there are many similarities between the Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You, even though differences between the two might be more obvious. Some similarities with the play and movie are the motives of the characters. Most of the people in 10 Things I Hate About You are similar to their Taming of the Shrew counterparts. In the play, it seems like they want the reader to think Petruchio and Katherine fall in love eventually. However, what really happens is Petruchio marrying her only for money and the challenge of ‘taming’ her. His way of keeping her from lashing out at him isn’t to talk to her to see what she is upset about, or trying to understand her. Instead, he tries to scare her by abusing his servants and acting insane, starves her, and emotionally abuses her. While this is happening, no one in her family cares, they are only happy that she’s gone, showing how women were viewed as a burden to their families and something they had to get rid of. In the end, Katherine is only ‘tamed’ because she is too scared to resist Petruchio. This is a terrible message saying that men should control women and the way to control strong women is abusing and manipulating
