In a world filled with technology we must ask ourselves, is technology taking us closer to the world of Big Brother? In the novel 1984 by George Orewell, Orwell has generated this unbelievable world in which no one would ever think to be possible, but then again pondering upon it our worlds are quite similar, it is slightly alarming. It was not noticed till recently that perhaps our technology is pulling us closer to the world of Big Brother. The technology used in the novel 1984 are correlated to the technology we use currently. For example, telescreens were placed in every house, the telescreen existed hence The Party can observe an individuals each and every move. The purpose of telescreens are to improve the safekeeping of every person for the reason that it helps The Party catch criminals but that is not the case, the telescreens existed morally to situate the general public to do as they are told with the knowledge they could not escape surveillance. Another use for these telescreens are propaganda, propaganda is frequently publicized on the two-way telescreens, commonly about terrorism from Eurasia and Eastasia. Telescreens cannot be turned off, in a way they resemble personal computers, and many people just leave them on most of time. We might want to compare the telescreen to a television but our televisions do not necessarily spy on us, I would compare the telescreen more to computers and laptops because they have built in cameras. Many people can hack into these cameras and simply watch what one is doing. Propaganda was seen practically all over for Big Brother in 1984, it was similar to advertisement. Our world is almost entirely under surveillance from CCTV system to cameras in grocery shop parking lots but we have... ... middle of paper ... ...e characters consumed their time adjusting all sorts of documents to make the world of the past seem favorable to the party by altering it. Now we use a few trusted online sources, most of our general knowledge originates from these sources. These could easily be deliberately altered. Thinking about it, when was the last time you saw someone use an encyclopedia? Most people use Google or Wikipedia as their sources. We put trust into these sources when we have no idea where they come from, the information comes from people that voluntarily put them up. It seems practically evident that the technology that now exists makes our world comparable to the world of Oceania. We should all consider how we use technology and what we use it for, we must not let technology control our world. By permitting technology to take over we are eliminating our own personal freedom.
David R. Morrow stated in his article, When Technologies Makes Good People Do Bad Things: Another Argument Against the Value-Neutrality of Technologies, “the use or invention of technology is not wrong it is the users who have ‘‘vicious’’ or condemnable preferences that will affect the outcome.” Orwell used technology in a way that many people of that time would never have imagined possible and created a fear of the future for his readers. How could a man, who was unaware of what the future would hold, be so acute and on point with how the world would be today? In his last interview Orwell said, “Always there will be the intoxication of power and always and every moment there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on the enemy who is helpless.” Orwell tried to warn people not of the technology but of the danger technology might cause in the future if it landed in the wrong hands. According to the Oxford Dictionary, Big Brother is “A person or organization exercising total control over people's lives.” Not only is Big Brother featured in George Orwell's novel 1984, the concept of a “Big Brother” is also seen everywhere around us in our everyday lives. Our modern-day form of Big Brother is our own government and the way it keeps surveillance over us. The way the United States and many other modern-day countries govern these days, with all their new advanced technology, we citizens are never truly alone. Our every move is constantly being watched. The difference between our modern-day Big Brother and the Big Brother in the novel 1984 is that our monitors claim to want to keep us safe, not to brainwash us to attain total power and control.
“For every 32 people in London, there is one surveillance camera.” Today one uses technology numerous times throughout the duration of the day without even realizing it. In an Orwellian type society, technology such as surveillance cameras and television screens dictate the majority of people’s life. Modern day surveillance cameras are typically put in by local governments to watch for crime. If Big Brother, the political icon in George Orwell’s 1984, truly does watch over the citizens, there are some precautions the citizens could take to prevent this. Today’s society shows many of the key characteristics that an Orwellian society shows.
We face the same conflict today, almost fifty years later. Our government uses all kinds of surveillance to keep track of its citizens, from satellites in space to cameras mounted on telephone poles. Although it's highly unlikely that total privacy has been taken from us, the concept is possible. When Orwell wrote 1984, he wrote of a foreign idea, not realizing that we are experiencing excerpts of his book in 1999. George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four portrayed a fictional character named ‘Big Brother,’ whom acted as the enigmatic dictator in a totalitarian state (Orwell, 1949). In the society where every citizen is under the surveillance of ‘Big Brother,’ most conform to the rulings and orders of the authorities out of fear, with the exception of a few.
The following quote appears numerous times throughout the novel regarding the violation of privacy, “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (Orwell 5). Big Brother is supposedly the figurehead of the Party, however, nobody knows for sure if he even exists. There are posters of Big Brother’s face sprawled throughout the proles’ neighborhoods, to remind citizens that they are indeed being watched in so many different ways. One of the ways in which citizens are monitored in their homes is through telescreens. This quote describes how Tod viewed telescreens, “… every room is equipped with a two-way television by means of which the police may tune in to any conversation anywhere” (150). As the previous quote suggests, telescreens are essentially security cameras in the citizens’ homes. This, in turn, is a blatant attack on one’s privacy. In society today thought control is much more pleasant, subtle, and diverse than it was in Orwell's vision.The media, television, the internet, computer games, and movies serve to indoctrinate us into the norms of society in a way which is much more complex than Big Brother's propaganda. We are depoliticized, kept away from the real issues by superficial diversions, much like the proles. Big Brother may not exist, but his name is everywhere. Perhaps Aldus Huxley's Brave New World would have better served as a predictor of modern society's fall. Orwell predicted that the truth would be concealed and that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley thought that the truth would be drowned in irrelevance and that what we love will ruin us. Orwell's political commentary and philosophical issues are still relevant, but we live in a world far more complex than he could have ever predicted. Big Brother isn't watching. He doesn't need to. We're watching him.
George Orwell’s Famous book 1984 is about a man who struggles to live under the superintendence of Big Brother. Throughout the novel, Winston struggles with constantly being surveilled and the lack of freedom. Similarly, in our world today, there are government agencies that have the power to listen to phone calls, track people's movements, and watch them through cameras. Winston’s world of surveillance and inadequate confidentiality both privately and publicly is in many aspects much the same as in our world today and the people should demand regulations to be set in place to protect their privacy.

When George Orwell’s epic novel 1984 was published in 1949 it opened the public’s imagination to a future world where privacy and freedom had no meaning. The year 1984 has come and gone and we generally believe ourselves to still live in “The Land of the Free;” however, as we now move into the 21st Century changes brought about by recent advances in technology have changed the way we live forever. Although these new developments have seamed to make everyday life more enjoyable, we must be cautious of the dangers that lie behind them for it is very possible that we are in fact living in a world more similar to that of 1984 than we would like to imagine.
James Stacey Taylor's article, "In Praise of Big Brother: Why We Should Learn to Stop Worrying and Love Government Surveillance" begins reviewing the concept of "Big Brother" as it was originally presented in George Orwell's 1984. The Big Brother started off as a fictional character in 1984-- a dictator of Oceania within a totalitarian state. Set within a society in which everyone is under complete surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens, the people are constantly reminded of this by the phrase “Big Brother is watching you” (Wikipedia) . Taylor goes on to explain some examples of recent surveillance technology and how it is applied in lives today. An interesting note and comparison between today’s technology and that of the telescreens in 1984, is that people could be sure that they could not be watched by Big Brother’s telescreens by going out of the cities into the country, where they only had to take care that their conversations were not monitored by hidden microphones (Taylor 227). He contrasts the two, highlighting the fact that “Such an escape is not impossible, for spy satellites can be used to monitor people wherever they go” (277). From there, Taylor perpetuates the framework for his position on the Big Brother notion. Taylor argues that, "rather than opposing such an expansion of surveillance technology, its use should be encouraged -- and not only in the public realm" (227). Taylor’s argument presented in a more formal construction is as follows:
Telescreens are the chosen device of the Party to scare their citizens out of rebellion. There are other things such as the mikes, and how they teach children to be advocates of the Party, but the most important factor is the use of the telescreens. This constant eye over the citizens does not allow them to rebel, making them fearful of the consequences.
1984, a novel by George Orwell, represents a dystopian society in which the people of Oceania are surveilled by the government almost all the time and have no freedoms. Today, citizens of the United States and other countries are being watched in a similar way. Though different technological and personal ways of keeping watch on society than 1984, today’s government is also able to monitor most aspects of the people’s life. 1984 might be a dystopian society, but today’s conditions seem to be moving towards that controlling state, where the citizens are surveilled by the government at all times. The 1984 community provided many ways to surveill its citizens, one being The Thought Police.

This novel relates the ruthless surveillance and lack of privacy of the citizens to government actions today. Totalitarianism, surveillance, and lack of privacy may all be common themes in Orwell’s novel 1984, but are also prevalent in modern day society and government. Many people today have and will continue to dismiss the ideologies mentioned in 1984 as unrealistic predictions which could never occur in the democratic run system they live by today. But, are Orwell’s ideologies completely implausible, or have his predictions already played a hidden role in society? Many citizens today are truly unaware of how much of their private lives are made public. Especially with new technological advances, the modern democratic government can easily track and survey citizens without their knowledge. While the government depicted in 1984 may use gadgets such as telescreens and moderators such as the Thought Police these ideas depicted can be seen today in the ever evolving democratic government known to be the "equivalent" of the people's voice. Orwell may have depicted a clearer insight into modern day surveillance then one may have imagined from this "fictional" novel.
We are lucky that power is not being enforced onto us by the government and that we still have our freedom. If the American society was put into such circumstances, I believe that we would not tolerate against that and that we would rebel and revolt against that type of government. The only difference in Big Brother’s society and ours is the fact that their civilians know they are being tracked for what they think, what they say, and what they are doing. We are fortunate enough to not have such extreme measures be forced upon us. We’re lucky to be able to have intimate relationships, to joy doing activities as we please, freedom of speech, and the right to have a say in our government.
