James Phelan’s commentary, while extremely interesting and enjoyable, turned out to be the least useful in developing my understanding of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. “On the Nature and Status of Covert Texts: A Reply to Gerry Brenner’s ‘Letter to ‘De Ole True Huck’ ” is, as the title plainly states, a response to Gerry Brenner’s story rather than Mark Twain’s novel. Phelan openly declares, “My analysis of Brenner’s critique of Huck in effect unmoors that critique from Twain’s text and reconstitutes it as a separate narrative” (433). The article was actually about “Letter to ‘De Ole Huck,” rather than Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Phelan discussed the novel only in comparison with Brenner’s narrative, thus assisting more with my understanding of the narrative than the novel. While I enjoyed reading the different ways Phelan managed to manipulate Brenner’s narrative and expose varying interpretations, it did not bring anything truly unique to my reading experience. Despite having not read the novel before, I did possess a degree of knowledge of the racial controversy surrounding it. My previously acquired knowledge no doubt influenced the way I read the novel, thereby coloring my interpretation as well. As I read, I purposefully sought passages potentially containing underlying or alternate meanings. My reading was geared toward identifying and understanding multiple viewpoints of a single event. Phelan acknowledges “Twain’s text does leave open the possibility that Huck places the rattlesnake on Jim’s blanket for some reason other than to play a good-natured prank,” in his article (432). ...65). Lester’s conclusion asserts, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a dismal portrait of the white male psyche” (370). My response to Lester would be that Twain warns readers from the very beginning, “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted,” and never claimed to be writing anything more than a fantastical adventure of a young boy (27). At first, I did not think that Lester’s article had anything valuable to offer, yet as I reflected on the anger it aroused in me I realized an error in my judgment. In forming my arguments against Lester, I had been forced to refer back to the covert texts found in my initial reading of the novel and revaluate many of my previous beliefs. Lester forced me to overthrow my attempts to abstain from picking one covert text over another. This helped me clarify the message I took from the novel as a whole.
How would you feel if a white boy couldn’t apologize to a grown black man because it goes against his faith? If I was in the black man’s position I would feel disrespected but I wouldn’t blame the white boy because he was brought up like that and it’s in his mentality to look at African Americans as property and with disgust. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain incorporates racism and slavery to show how and why it is wrong. He uses Huck, one of his man characters, to demonstrate how a white boy breaks forth from society’s racist ideas and the people around him to have a strong friendship with a slave name Jim, who becomes a fugitive. He uses Jim to demonstrate humanity and how it has nothing to do with the color of your skin. He also shows the struggle African Americans had to go through during that period of time in order to be free. Through friendship Huck learns that Jim is a regular human being just like everyone else.
Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn depicts how he is a racist. He shows it in many ways in which his characters act. All of the people in the towns are slave owners, and treat black slaves with disrespect. In the time period of the novel slavery was not legal, but racism was. Many scenes in his novel make slaves look like fools. Mark Twain does this purposely to make colored people look and sound like fools, because he is a racist person.
In the novel Huck Finn, the author repeatedly uses satire to ridicule the insanity of racial ignorance and inequity of the time period. With his masterful use of role reversal, irony, and the obvious portrayal of double standards, Twain exemplifies the injustices of different races contrasting them with example after example of counter-argument shown through the friendship and adventures of Jim and Huck together.
Mark Twain’s book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, educates high school students on how the Southern society operated at that time. When analyzing the novel, one can see that Twain’s writing clearly does not endorse slavery or the use of derogatory language toward African-Americans. When a book uses the "N-word" 213 times (Carey-Webb 24) and portrays the African American characters as inferior to their white counterparts, it becomes easy to assume that the book’s author Mark Twain is using this novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as a form of racist propaganda to display upon America in the late 19th century post-Civil War Era. By the late 19th century slavery had finally ended across the United States, but racial tension, discord and discrimination were still very much at large. For those opposed to slavery in its original iteration, and, therefore, opposed to its continuation in this form, the only thing left to do was to continue fighting the battle for equality and rights in any way they knew how.
Perhaps the most controversial part of Huckleberry Finn is the ending, fondly dubbed by some as the Phelps Farm Fiasco. Directly preceding this is a scene where Huck struggles with himself, deciding whether to be “good” and turn Jim in or “go to hell” and free his friend. Dramatically, he chooses the latter -- casting aside his attempt to conform -- and heads to the Phelps farm in order to rescue Jim. However, once Tom appears, Huck and Jim both seem willing to play along with his ineffective, elaborate rescue scheme. Furthermore, Tom later reveals that Jim was free the whole time! Despite all the criticism, of racism and other questionable material for young readers, Mark Twain’s The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is a superbly written novel, which in the opinion of this reviewer should not be remove the literary cannon. Twain’s novel is a coming of age story that teaches young people many valuable lessons and to some extend makes students reexamine their own lives and morals. The most common argument for its removal from the literary canon is that the novel is too racist; it offends black readers, perpetuates cheap slave-era stereotypes, and deserves no place on today’s bookshelves. However one must ask if Twain is encouraging traditional southern racism or is Twain disputing these idea.
Racism, a major issue in society for hundreds of years, even after the abolition of slavery, still affects millions of people. African Americans today still sensitivities towards racism, and the reading of Huckleberry Finn demonstrates the pertinence of racism today similarly to two hundred years ago. Through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy, Huckleberry Finn, Twain illustrates the controversy of racism and slavery during the aftermath of the Civil War. Since Huck is an adolescent, he is vulnerable and greatly influenced by the adults he meets during his coming of age. His expedition down the Mississippi steers him into the lives of a diverse group of inhabitants who have conflicting morals. The novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an extremely important work of literature that addresses many world problems such as: poverty, race relations, and our role in society. Although some of these issues are not as prevalent today as they were in the 1880s, the novel still sends an important satirical message to anyone who is willing hear this story.
