What is loyalty? Loyalty means being faithful to one’s own country, ideals, and friends. Loyalty is illustrated as Mark Antony in this The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. This play, which was set in 44 B.C., was written by William Shakespeare in 1599. “I shall remember: When Caesar says “Do this,” it is performed.” (l.ii.9-10). Mark Antony also changed his party and completely devoted himself to Caesar when Rome split into two factions; the aristocrats supporting Pompey or the republic and the populous or imperialist left seeking the help of Caesar. Mark Antony devoted and risked his own life for Julius Caesar. His loyalty might have blinded him from Julius Caesar’s perception of his being a party-going individual that would not betray him like a thinking man, such as Cassius would. Mark Antony was born on January 14, 83 B.C. in Rome and died on August 1, 30 B.C.. A distant second cousin to Julius Caesar this subsequently led to one of the most loyal bonds Julius Caesar was part of. Mark Antony was also one of Caesar’s politicians which during Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and the postliminary civil war Antony’s loyalty paid off. Ceasar had delegated Mark Antony the Administer of Italy while Caesar removed opposing politicians in Spain, North Africa and Greece. Mark Antony’s loyalty to Julius Caesar, went as far that one could call his behavior that of a servant as he often did anything Caesar requested of him as Caesar asks if he will touch his wife, Calpurnia, during the holy race, Lupercalia. The belief that since Mark Antony was a holy man him touching Calpurnia during this race would make her fertile and she would be able to become pregnant with Caesar’s child. Mark Antony’s loyalty to Julius Caesar was one of the most loyal bonds history can account for. He had changed his political preference to accommodate for Julius Caesar’s friendship. He put his life on the line on multiple occasions to prove his loyalty to Caesar. Even though Julius Caesar’s party sought his demise Mark Antony stayed true to Caesar. After the death of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony proved his love for Caesar by giving a eulogy at his funeral. During the eulogy,which Brutus gave permission to Antony to give, Antony cleverly made Julius Caesar look good as he sarcastically destroys the reputations of the conspirators ”He was my friend,and just to me. But Brutus says he was ambitious, And Brutus is an honorable man.”(lll.ii.84-86) Antony also hunted down some of the conspirators that led to the death of his lord.
