This Is Our Word
From many of Dorothy Allison’s writings “This Is Our Word” made me understand what the true meaning of art really is. Allison uses great strategies in her writing like the usage of her tone, and also the descriptive language she uses to describe art and create imagery. Many people like me can look at a picture and stare at it for a long time and still wouldn’t be able to see what it means or what it’s trying to say. Allison made me understand that art isn’t just a picture with bright colors; she made me realize that everything tends to have a story behind it.
In the beginning of her first paragraph she describes a mural of Jesus she had seen at a church where her mother was actually getting baptized at. She stated that the mural impacted her and she also described it as a “life size, sweaty painting, that looked rouged and pale and pouty as Elvis Presley” (Allison 590). As I continued reading I came to wonder what made this picture so interesting and why it impacted her a lot. Historically and currently African American women use art as a way to express themselves, their emotions and as an act of resistance. In this paper, I will discuss the various ways two very influential artists, Laurie Cooper and Lorna Simpson, use imagery to uncover and forefront the various forms of oppression that affect their lives as African American women. Since the late 1970s, African American art, as a form of self expression, explores issues which concern African peoples worldwide. During this time period, African American artists use symbols which represent the struggles, despair, hopes and dreams of a people striving to debunk prominent stereotypes and dismantle the intersecting oppressions of race, class and gender.
At the top of the artwork the upper part of the cross extends beyond the altarpiece. The edge of John the Evangelist’s red robe on the left of the altarpiece and the edge of Mary Magdalene’s pale blue skirt on the right are cut off when the panel ends, giving the viewer the feeling that, rather than looking in on the scene, the viewer is actually taking part in the scene. This, added to the empathy invoked through the delicate, heart-wrenching rendering of the figures in the artwork, let the observer directly interact with the painting and places him/her within the narrative.

This book was also one of my first encounters with an important truth of art: that your work is powerful not because you convey a new emotion to the audience, but because you tap into an emotion the audience already feels but can't express.
When looking at the painting it gives us a glimpse of the past. It looks almost like a photograph. The fine detail from the building on the right with the statue on top. The citizens walking around.
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
Their way of coping with a political as well as social issues can be seen through their expressive pieces of art. Particularly Eve Drewlove seemed to have an expressive way of transferring her feelings onto the canvas. Ann Jones also had a very interesting way of conveying the struggles women faced onto paper. She used women and lots of text to provide obvious and clear messages about daily struggles of being a housewife, oppressed by society, chores and trying to be a part of the American lifestyle. Art is a very useful and insightful way for historians to connect with the world in which the artists lived in. Every single artist has his or her own way of expression however most artists and particularly in this exhibition there were a lot of personal connections and feelings that were expressed. Miranda, Arthur's wife, is an artist and her job is seen by Arthur's actor friends as cute but meaningless. Art is a form of human expression. Art portrays various ideas, feelings such as love, happiness, boredom and sorrow. But sometimes, art is only considered as an extra elective within the school curriculum and just a waste of time. So here today at Palm Beach State college is an irritated professor, who also teaches at Palm Beach State college, Samantha Salzinger gave a speech on “The Importance of Art, ” presented on November 4, 2015, and she argues that art is an important subject and should deemed as a core class. Salzinger begins building her credibility with personal stories and reputable sources, convincing statistics and facts, and successfully engages the audiences

From learning about life through art, people then strive to be on the same level as the art the see, trying to live a grander lifestyle. Showing that to a certain extent art can influence life more than life can influence art.
Throughout history religion has been taught by art. The Christian religion especially, teaches about their religion through stories or parables. Some of these stories have been turned into art to further the understanding of the story. Many Christian artists have showed Christ’s life through paintings. Carl Bloch had the opportunity to paint the life of Christ for the Frederiksborg Castle church. They showed his birth to the Virgin Mary and his death on the cross. These paintings also show what he did on earth. Christ taught and healed many people. Some of his paintings are alter pieces for the church. The size of these paintings invites its viewers to experience the story in the painting and apply it to themselves. In the painting Christ Healing at the Pool of Bethesda by Carl Bloch, it is portrayed that even in times of darkness and despair Christ is there to help people.
I believe Cynthia Freeland wrote this book creatively and accurately. People from around the world with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds appreciate, value, and passionately pursue the creation and assortments of art (Freeland 208). There will never be a ‘correct’ way in defining art. Art will continue to branch further through new media. Artists will continue to expand awareness and explore or find new ways to either shock us or entrance us with beauty in both sight and sound (Freeland 209).
The combination of words and images in contemporary art production is an extremely useful and powerful vehicle for artists to use in order to express their messages. The text can either support the image or contradict the image in order to demonstrate the transparency of either or both elements. Two artists who combine both image and text in their art are well known Australian and New Zealander contemporary artists, Gordon Bennett and Colin Mccahon. “Personal Narratives” is a must see exhibition as it displays Bennett’s and Mccahon’s clever use of both image and text to convey personal narratives. Gordon Bennet is an Aboriginal Australian who uses text to communicate personal issues of racism, Colin Mccahon is an artist from New Zealand who uses text to convey________. These artists have powerful messages to communicate and are doing it in a highly urbane and strong way.
For Jane, “Art is an important subject because it offers people the opportunity to process their surroundings, their troubles, and their existence in a way that is productive and healthy.” (Baker). She also views are an a means of improving students academically by changing the way they think:
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
