Parenting may be said as an experiment, because every parent has different views and ways of raising their own children. Parents raise their child in such ways in which they believe is beneficial and healthy for the child. A story that came across media news about a baby, Storm, being raised as “genderless” fueled a controversy in defiance of gender stereotyping. The Witterick family in Canada believed that by acknowledging this practice it would, “tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a standup to what the world could become in Storm’s lifetime” (Davis and James). However, in terms of raising a genderless child, this can cause the child to be unprepared to face the conventional norms or society. This practice may be causing the child a disservice. The approach that the parents are taking with baby Storm is not quite practical. It is causing too much media attention and the child will grow up being famous notated with the name “The Genderless Baby.” Storm might not be able to simply accept this when he grows up, because Storm did not get consent if s(he) wants his identity to be introduced to the media. The parents made this choice not the baby. As sad as it is, one of the biggest things that people are defined by is our biological sex than gender. Families that are raising genderless babies face many complications with the societies response to the deviation as people against this practice comments, “One more messed up kid in the world and this is so wrong in so many ways” (Davis and James). If the purpose is to let an individual to have freedom of choice, one should also keep in mind that it is one thing for a person to just decide later in life if they want to choose a different path of behavior to live by. Teaching children to discover and express themselves is the right thing to do, and soon they will find out who they are. However, the kind of parenting that the Witterick are doing to baby Storm risks the baby’s fututre from the pressure that s(he) will deal with the society. So if the child, later in life, decides that he or she wants to be the other sex, then they can choose for themselves then. A young child craves and requires structure, guidance and nurturing in order develop mentally and emotionally, which goes along with their physical maturing process. From day one they're looking to the parents or parental figures to meet their needs and to help define their curiosities.

In today’s society, it can be argued that the choice of being male or female is up to others more than you. A child’s appearance, beliefs and emotions are controlled until they have completely understood what they were “born to be.” In the article Learning to Be Gendered, Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell- Ginet speaks out on how we are influenced to differentiate ourselves through gender. It starts with our parents, creating our appearances, names and behaviors and distinguishing them into a male or female thing. Eventually, we grow to continue this action on our own by watching our peers. From personal experience, a child cannot freely choose the gender that suits them best unless our society approves.

Many argue that Brutus was a patriot, and many argue that he was a betrayer. People argue that he was a betrayer because he betrayed Caesar’s trust and gave a speech against him. However, when you think of Caesar’s personality, arrogant and slightly reckless, he could’ve made bad decisions and caused Rome a great deal of trouble. Brutus was a patriot to Rome since he did what was best for the country and even took his own life instead of running away. He put his own feelings aside to do what was right.

Writer, Jayme Poisson, discusses in her article about parents keeping their child’s gender a secret. The parents, Kathy Witterick and David Stocker, allow their children to choose the clothing they would like to dress in, as well as the toys they play with. Witterick and Stocker have three children, Jazz, Kio, and Storm; Jazz and Kio are both male and Storm’s gender is unknown. Our belief states are determined by the external factors, for example, perceived complexity and priming ethics is an interesting subject and everyone lives by their thoughts and their ways. Everyone lives by a different code. The difference between morality and ethics is that morality is about primary making the right choices and ethics is proper reasoning. In the essay “The ethics of belief” by W. K. Clifford, he argues that if anything on insufficient evidence, then it’s unethical. In this essay I will remain undecided with what Clifford is trying to say. I agree and disagree with some of his viewpoints. Some I do have to say are unethical and some are reasonable. What Clifford is trying to portray is interesting. Especially since he comes from a religious background. And reading about his new discovery, is quite interesting.

In the past, this condition (also known as hermaphroditism) was one of secrecy, and it was common for parents to choose their baby’s gender for them and to have doctors remove ovaries from a child whom could grow into a boy, or remove the penis from a baby that showed more sign of being female. There are a variety of different issues that can cause a child to be intersex. Some could be an extra X or Y chromosome or genetic mutation. The issue is that people do not always grow into the gender that they are given, whether they be intersex or not. Despite the either-or categories society has perpetuated on gender, intersex children should be given the choice of which gender they choose to identify with after puberty—for their own well-being, emotionally and physically.

According to Kate Bornstein and their work Gender Outlaw, “the first question we usually ask new parents is: Is it a boy or a girl?” (46). This question creates a sense of a rigid dichotomy, by which individuals must outwardly conform to either being male or female. Individuals who do not prescribe to this binary concept of gender identity find themselves ostracized from much of society – ignored, ridiculed, and laughed at as an insignificant minority. For this group of people, “either/or is used as a control mechanism,” creating a normative group by which power can be derived from (102). According to Bornstein, the concept of the gender binary being the “natural state of affairs” is one of the most dangerous thoughts proliferated about gender within modern society (105). For individuals who do not conform to this socially created structure, they are seen as opposing the natural order of things, and subsequently, their power is stripped by society, and they are deemed as unnatural and inhuman.
