This means that it is not a true biography but that it is somewhat based in truth. The biography is about how women have struggled to be part of the artistic world for the last few hundred years. They were not necessarily taught to write, they were not allowed to act in plays, and even if they did manage to do one of those things their work was degraded because they were women.
