As Space Exploration advanced so did the diversity of those who entered into it. Only a mere two years after the first man entered into space the first women did, Valentina Tereshkova. After her experience in space, many more women made their mark through the Space program. Each of these talented women strived for excellence in the field of Space Exploration and has provided great role models for people throughout the world. They have made an impact not only in equality among all genders but also in the knowledge we know today about space. These women, all diverse, shared one thing in common, the title of Astronaut.
The Space program has been enriched with the help of many profound women working on it and making their mark on history. A grand total of fifty-five females have had the opportunity to enter into space. Of the fifty-five women, six of them have been serving and working under the Russian/ Soviet Union space program. A total of one woman has participated in China's space effort by becoming an astronaut. In China the word for Astronauts is Taikonaut. The United States, a leader in the worlds space efforts, has had forty-eight women astronauts all serving NASA in their expeditions. Of those forty-eight women who served the American Space program, only forty-three of them were actually American. The other five were Chinese, Indian, and Iranian. Lastly, eighteen women are scheduled to fly on space missions yet to be.Space has been entered by many women from all over the globe and hopefully this pattern will continue in later years.

Eileen Collins, Valentina Tereshkova, Mae Jemison, Sally Ride, Svetlana Savitskaya, and many other women who got the opportunity to enter into space all made their impact on modern History and Science. These names will be remembered throughout the decades because of the amazing strides they made in their Space Programs and for their unique stories on how they got the opportunity to go to space. No matter what program these women were working for there is no doubt that they have all made quite a difference the world. All these women risked their lives in the pursuit of obtaining knowledge, credibility, and improvement for their Space Programs. Their loyalty and dedication for what they did will forever influence generations to come. Never forget what these women did because maybe one day you can make an impact like they did.
In the 1940’s World War II was the most widespread war in history. After Pearl Harbor was attacked the United States quickly became involved. Women pilots were utilized for the first time by the government. The Women AirForce Service Pilots (WASP) program freed up male pilots for combat service. The WASP’s exchanged knowledge and service for the U.S. While the program was active the 1,830 women who got accepted were given the opportunity to explore military aviation. The women encountered discrimination from the government and other male soldiers but,
People have always been divided or classified into two simple categories, male or female. Many of them may have heard at some point in their lives the ongoing discussion of feminism, but not all have taken a deep look at what has been done and has happened for everybody to have reached such level that women like men are viewed in most and many ways equal. Amelia Earhart was a person that changed and proved the ability, responsibility, and equality of women. Amelia Earhart's expedition across the Atlantic Ocean affected many women's lives because it allowed her to keep doing what she had always desired, she became a role model for other women, and she changed society's perspective of women.
Military aviation was in no way spared from the deficit of labour and resources across the globe. In 1939, an American pilot named Jackie Cochran, famous for her competitive achievements breaking speed and altitude records, wrote a letter to Eleanor Roosevelt suggesting that women aviators could help out in the face of an emergency. By 1940, Britain’s Royal Air Force began using women as ferry pilots and in Russia, women were flying combat missions (Myers, 640).

There are many women and men in the United States Navy but it was not easy for women to be able to join the military. Women have had a rough past and fight with gaining the right to join. Women in the Navy are one of the greatest additions to the Navy. Although opposers will say that they do not belong there, women in the United States Navy have proven that they do belong because many women have overcome gender-based biases, made great historical impact, and lead combat situations over men successfully.
Earhart is primarily commemorated for an attempted flight around the world that she never completed. The reason for this is because of the mystery of her never being seen again, but people after her time did not realize her further important revolutionary acts. Earhart was a feminist by actions, rather than words. “Throughout her career Earhart represented the modern woman using technology as a means to liberate herself from social constraints” (American Decades n. pag.). The author stated that Earhart was using the technology of airplanes to be reduced from stress brought onto women. Earhart later realized she could use her flight talent to support women’s rights. She went out to prove to men that women could equally do the same jobs by breaking records flying planes. Earhart wanted to be preeminent to men:
Amelia Earhart is one of the worlds greatest aviators, heroes, women, and all around person. She wasn't afraid of the things people said about Women not being aviators. She broke the stereo type boundaries and let the world know that she was not afraid of being a one of the best aviators of our time.

It has been almost 75 years since the famous pilot, Amelia Earhart, disappeared somewhere over the Pacific during her attempt to fly around the world. She was very-well known and when news hit of her disappearance, many were devastated. Amelia changed many lives, giving inspiration and serving as a role-model for women everywhere. Her impact still stands today. The tasks she went through and all her hard work to change the female image will never be forgotten.
In Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: Voyager we finally see females taking front stage for the first time, unlike the previous series, turning the tables on all other traditional male dominated television shows. Voyager as a whole can be used as a template for writers and producers to follow as the correct way to portray women. In doing so we would begin to change the way young women see these positive role models and strive for higher goals, in turn setting into motion the goals Gene Roddenberry envisioned back in 1966.
Blasting off into space was once an all-male’s game. But on the heels of such trailblazers as Sally Ride, engineer and inventor Ellen Ochoa became part of growing breed of NASA female astronauts who have since helped change all that. Ellen Ochoa, a veteran astronaut, is the 11th director of the Johnson Space Center. She is JSC’s first Hispanic director, and its second female director. In 1993, she made history by becoming the first Hispanic woman from any country to travel in space. She would follow up this journey with three more space flights in 1994, 1999 and 2001, logging more than 700 hours in space. Despite being rejected two times from NASA’s Training Program,
Sally Kristen Ride, an American astronaut, made history when she became the first woman and youngest person to travel in space. To educate children, she enjoyed writing books concerning travel and discoveries in space. Ride was born on May 26, 1951 in Encino, California and passed away from pancreatic cancer on July 23, 2012 in La Jolla, California. Ever since she was a young girl, Ride had always been curious about the world around her. Ride’s various accomplishments led her to receive many prestigious honors such as being inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame and recognized as a renowned American leader. Two vital influences in Sally Kristen Ride’s life were her high school physiology teacher and her mother.
It is within man’s blood and nature to explore, and space is our next New World. Man’s first achievement in space travel was the launch of the Sputnik on October 4, 1957. For the next decades, space travel was roaring like a rocket, fueled by man’s desire to explore, man’s desire for knowledge, and man’s desire to beat his enemies. However, these impulses have died out as the well of government funding has been diverted to wars and debts, and the interest of the American people has been diverted to wars and debts. Amidst all these issues it is debated as to whether or not space travel is worth the money and the attention of scientists, particularly since humanity faces so many issues on earth currently. However, because of the past inventions, current services, and future benefits, space travel is indeed worth the money and attention of governments and people. It is within our hands to control man’s advancement, and space travel is the next venue to do so.

Astronaut, hero, and inspiration are three words Sally Ride is described by. In her lifetime, she was a professor, professional tennis player, astronaut, author, company owner, and women’s rights advocate. It is no wonder she is remembered as a hero to everyone in space and on Earth. Sally Ride changed the world by making women equal to men everywhere. She encouraged young girls to make an impact and take important jobs in the areas of math and science. She left a legacy as America’s symbol of women’s equality.
