No animal deserves to die, they are our companions and our friends. The death of a pet or just an animal in general has a huge effect on at least half if not most of the human population. Whether you knew it or not animals can and do feel the same amount of pain as humans do, so why kill them? Rescue shelters shouldn't kill animals because no animal deserves to die, many animals are killed each year for no reason, and animal lives mean just as much as human lives after all they are considered are friends. There are many trusted websites you can go on and see that most of these new shelters are no-kill. With that being said we go onto our first topic.

Most of the animals have been beaten and abused or left to fend for themselves. Some were just puppies when they entered the shelters and some entered as adults. There are many people in different countries and states, including are own that have no kill animal shelters. That's what the ideal animal rescue shelter should be like as said by BFS “It’s not easy to think about the number of pets killed every year in our country’s animal shelters”. The Best Friends Shelter is supporting the fact that yes there are many animals killed in shelters, it is very saddening yet nothing is being done about it and it keeps happening, that is absolutely unnecessary. Another site also says that “A “no-kill” rescue is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety”. Some of these reasons can include the management of the shelters, the locations of the shelters, and what happens on the inside. The management of these shelters should be monitored by someone of a higher standpoint which should be the case with all of the shelters. The locations of some of these shelters could be just put in a bad part of the United States. These locations can make the people not want to adopt from these shelters. Some of the issues that happen in the no-kill shelter like neglect and treating the animals wrong have recently surfaced in the news. Many states like North Carolina has had many problems with this that has led to undercover cases from PETA. Sadly this happens to various animals each year that are brought to Kill Shelters. The ASPCA has stated that three to four million animals are euthanized in shelters in the United States. An absolutely shocking 60% of all animals that belong to shelters(McLellan). Many of these animals that are irrationally killed are completely worthy of adoption. The main reason for all these senseless killings is overpopulation.

Animals are precious, loving, and sweet creatures, but many are having their lives cut short. Did you know that 7.6 million animals enter shelters every year? Of those animals, thirty one percent of dogs are euthanized and forty one percent of cats are euthanized. If you do the math, that is 2.4 million dogs and 3.1 million cats. Why are we doing this to our animals?
Animals shelters euthanize dogs or cats because they have no room. this is unacceptable because it said on ASPCA that “Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats). Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner.” I think that they can keep the dogs
Money is also being taken for shelters to operate. Some countries didn’t pay for the euthanization of their pet problem though, they found another way to try to fix the issue. “.... the dogcatchers of New York caught 5,825 dogs, which were then placed into crates and lowered into the East River to drown. ”(Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol, Domestic Animal Overpopulation). ...he first idea to come to mind would be to prevent their pain, if animals feel pain just as much as humans, it should initiate the same immediate response. If humans choose to let this issue slide, it ultimately brings to light what we as humans truly value, whether we value convenience over humanity and common sense. We need to act now, for the sake of the animals, and for the sake of humanity.

It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Did you know, according to the “Pet Statistics” from ASPCA, there were about 5,000 animal shelters in the United States? In those shelters, about 5-7 million animals were rescued each year and approximately 3-4 million of them were euthanized. That was nearly half to the animal rescued. In other words, thousands of animals were euthanized daily. However, many of these euthanized animals were healthy, treatable, and adoptable pets. What caused these adoptable companions to be euthanized in animal shelters? The major cause was the overpopulation of animals without a home. Moreover, the irresponsible owners and breeders that did not sterilize their animals caused the overpopulation of animals.

Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
