Although Google seems to be the perfect job, having a significantly high job satisfaction and is proven to be the best company to work for, they are having problems retaining numerous of their talented employees. Google’s motivation tactics could be altered to help keep their employees from walking out and creating their own companies.

Google has a high job satisfaction of 84%, and is named the best company to work for, four consecutive years in a row. ("Google Named Best Company to Work for for Fourth Year.") Google appears to have a fun, upbeat, exciting work environment, while actively following their philosophy, which is “to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world”. Employees seem to love their job and their work environment, which demonstrates McGregor’s Theory Y in some ways. On the other hand, for some Googlers, this isn’t enough. Some wish to bring their ideas to start their own company. Google expects them to do all of the hard work, gives them a big fat check, but in the end it’s Google’s product. Employees want to be recognized and applauded for their tedious work, not just give Google the ownership. When employees started leaving, Google offered raises and promotions, but they weren’t interested in that. What Googlers really want is credit for their hard work, and support. Google should strive to practice aspects of employee recognition programs so they feel important in the company. Google managers should use McClelland’s Three-Needs Theory. The Need for Achievement drives employees to succeed and excel in relation to a set of standards. Employees strive for personal achievement rather than rewards such as money and promotions. The Need for Power will give employees the satisfaction of having more power within the company, and feel that their presence is needed and appreciated.
