People should have to get a license to become parents
"Empathy underlies virtually everything that makes society work--like trust, altruism, collaboration, love, charity. Failure to empathize is a key part of most social problems--crime, violence, war, racism, child abuse and inequality just to name a few” (Perry 4). Humans are capable of some serious cruelty. It is on the news everyday with people criticizing, insulting, bullying, assaulting, and killing each other. Much of this behavior is caused by a lack of empathy, which is supposedly an instinctive trait, though not all are able to effectively use it. First, “Every year, millions of the people we’ve created so carelessly are being starved, beaten or otherwise traumatized” (Tittle). A large number of these children will end up in the welfare system while they are young, and potentially the prison system as adults. Second, families are not the only ones who pay the price for this abusive and destructive parenting relationship; all of society pays the price. (Giving Kids) This is done by paying billions of dollars on things like gang warfare, building and maintaining more prisons, rehabilitation, health care, and mental health care. Third, parents who are abused as children are more prone to abuse their own children. (Giving Kids) Abusive and destructive parenting creates abusive and destructive adults who continue the cycle of abuse with their own children. In order to raise children to be responsible and productive adults, parents have to show their children by their actions what type of values they wish to impart. (Should We Invest) If parents value education and hard work, then parents need to show children by being supportive and encouraging and demonstrating what it means to be a good citizen. Parents also have the ability to affect a child’s success or failure in their chosen career. (Bad Parenting) This can be done by parents not being supportive or encouraging, or by constant negativity and insulting comments and behaviors. An article in US News and World Report states that “Twenty-three percent of high school dropouts surveyed cited lack of support and encouragement from their parents as the reason they quit school” (Sheehy). If children drop out of high school, then their earning potential will be considerably less than those who do go on to complete high school.
