Operation Valkyrie was a failed attempt to kill Adolf Hitler. Between 1939 and 1945 Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party started the second world war. It began on September 1, 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland, declarations of war from France and the United Kingdom quickly followed. By early 1941 Hitler had formed the Axis alliance with Italy and Japan and had control over the majority of Europe. The Operation was lead by Colonel Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg though he had many helpers including Generals Friedrich Olbricht and Henning von Tresckow another man who played a big part was Colonel General Ludwig Beck.

The key to success was convincing the soldiers that the Nazi leaders had acted in treason against germany and needed to be removed. So they needed the cooperation of Frederick Fromm the commander of the Reserve Army. Once they had control of the Reserve Army Operation Valkyrie would be carried out but as you know that failed. Operation Valkyrie lacked in success due to the delayed implementation of the plan until Hitler’s official death could be confirmed. When it was announced that he was not dead, Valkyrie was not put into effect. As soon as Hitler recovered and realised what was going on he contacted Major Remer and ordered him to assume control of the situation in Berlin and spread the word that he was not dead. Then once commander Frederick Fromm heard that the coup had failed he arranged the executions of Staffenberg Friedrich Olbricht, and Werner von Haeften. Over the next few months most of the inner circle ether were executed or committed suicide. Between August 1944 and April about ninety of the supposed conspirators were executed.
