Teenagers spend a lot of time looking forward to a specific birthday: the famous sweet 16th birthday. Parents and friends will oftentimes throw big surprise parties for someone’s 16th birthday. When a teenager turns 16, a lot of doors open up for him or her. For example, teenagers look forward to driving and hopefully owning their own cars, and with that comes getting a license. Getting a driver's license in high school is important because it comes with a sense of independence, responsibility, and freedom to go anywhere. First, getting a license is important for teens because it gives them a sense of independence. To begin, when teenagers have their license, they can drive places on their own! To begin, teens will potentially have the ability to drive themselves to and from school by themselves. When a teenager gets his/her license, a lot of doors open up for him/her. A licensed teenager will be able to drive to school, get a choice in what time they'll be somewhere, apply for jobs, and have more freedom. In addition, an exciting opportunity that comes along with a driver's license is getting to spend more time with friends. If and when teenagers have had their driver's license for six months, they are then able to drive around a few friends. Also, teenagers will be able to go shopping, out on dates, and not have to worry about other people’s schedules. If teenagers take their time in the instructional driving course, do well on their tests, and become responsible drivers, they will have great freedom that comes from having a driver’s license. Congratulations on turning fifteen and a half years old! I bet you are excited as I was back when I was fifteen and a half. With earning my Driver’s License, I feel like a more independent (and less dependent) person than if I did not. Knowing this, I knew I had to endure a long tedious process to actually get my license. Obtaining my Driver’s License has provided me with three key components: the freedom, the responsibility, and the dedication.

Also, studies show that the same bad behavior commonly seen in men in their twenties is seen in sixteen and seventeen year olds. Driving is a huge part of a teenager’s social life, too. They need licenses to attend school, work, or social events. So, a way to keep the driving age at sixteen and have better driving on the road is to have a graduated driver license. This GDL would make it so new drivers would gain experience driving under supervision of an older, experienced driver before they can drive on their own.
Drunk Driving is an effect of very high insurance costs and criminal charges for teens under the influence. Overall underage drinking costs up to about 27 million dollars. A problem with getting in an accident when under the influence is they are not only responsible for their own vehicle, but for the other vehicles involved in the accident. Since this can be very costly and overwhelming, their parents might have to step in and pay these fines, which is unfair to them and should only be taken care of by the person that caused it. Most parents think getting their teens their driver's license will lift a weight off of their backs when in reality it seems to only do the opposite once the facts of insurance and statistics come into play. The article “Teen Drivers” provides some statistic such as, “A driver’s licence is a ticket to freedom! At last, teens can drive themselves to school, work and recreational activities .”(“Teen Driving,” par 1) This is a fact of how this small piece of plastic placed in the hands on a teen can be seen as a ticket to freedom. Another thing the article states is, “Parents are thrilled because they do not have to chauffeur the kids around anymore.”(“Teen Driving, par 2) This statement reveals how parents get their freedom back as well teens are gaining their first taste of freedom. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.

Getting a driver’s license can be the most exciting part of a teens life. But what do teens have to do beforehand in order to obtain that license? For some, it's months of training and for others, they can complete everything within a few months. But does all that training make teens better drivers?
