Women may also decide to have an abortion due to rape and teen pregnancy, not just health related issues. One in every five pregnancies happens to be a teenage girl (Do Something). Rape is a huge reason why women may decide to get an abortion to end the pregnancy. To carry around a child that a woman was not ready for is not fair to her. As stated in the article, “Victims of Sexual Violence: Statistics,” every ninety-eight seconds, an American is sexually assaulted in the United States. There is an estimated average that more than three hundred thousand victims of rape and sexual assault every year. The people are pro-choice and defend the women who decide to have an abortion. Many don’t know this but, some people, known as pro-life, will deliberately go out of their way to attack women who have had an abortion. They harass, threaten, stalk, and sometimes even go as far as killing women who took an unborn child’s life. “Pro-life position is that a new human life is created at the moment of fertilization and is, thus, entitled to the same legal protections as any other human being” (WND). With that being said, pro-life supports the idea that every child has a right to live and to be born. They don’t believe any excuse is acceptable to terminate a child’s life, even if the mother is mentally unfit or not financially stable. Their argument is more focused on the unborn child rather than putting themselves in the mother’s shoes (Human Rights). Pro-life supporters do not see the reasons, situations, or benefits to abortion for the mother. There are many reasons to why people do not want to support abortion. Supporters of pro-life think women who get pregnant and want an abortion are irresponsible. To bring an unwanted child in the world is what’s irresponsible. The main reason being, killing an unborn child making the mother a murder in their eyes. She isn’t on birth control and didn’t know the consequences of having unprotected intercourse. If she were to keep the child, she risks being the topic of discussion at school which can lead to behavioral changes and lack in the performance of education. She is also not going to be financially stable to support her child on her own and would possibly have to give up school to get a full-time job. If the teen were to get an abortion, she would not have to deal with the stress and all the responsibility at such a young age. In many teen pregnancies, the mother often is left alone to take care of the child as well. An anonymous teen writes, “Having a kid at my age would not be just unfair to me, it would be unfair to the child, who would grow up without stability. The child would have to deal with the stress of the mother struggle to keep a roof over our heads” (Not Ready to be a Mom). That quote points out that not only does the mother have to look out for herself, but what her child’s life would look like as well. Dealing with the emotions of having an abortion is a major downfall, but the teen would most likely learn from this experience and grow with it to be more
