I think the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child, also known as WSCC, is a much needed approach to reaching students and helping them become healthy, productive, and informed members of society. According to the WSCC article put out by the ASCD and the CDC explaining this new approach, "health and education affect individuals, society, and the economy and, as such, must work together whenever possible. Schools are a perfect setting for this collaboration" (Whole school, 2014). I agree that school's are a natural setting for addressing all the dimensions of the whole child because the majority of the students within a community are found in the school and so the students can be reached in one place. In a society in which childhood obesity rates are on the rise, physical education is an important aspect of student's health that needs to be incorporated into their daily lives. Along with the physical benefits, by participating in physical education and regular physical activity (whether it be extra-curricular, at recess, or in the regular classroom), student's academic performance is greatly improved. This component is important because when a community embraces and supports what is being taught by the schools they again give students the opportunity to reinforce and put into practice what they are learning about in school. There are many benefits to promoting a healthier lifestyle including safer environments, increased revenue for business, lowered health care costs, and job creation (Health, 2011).
