Stress is something that affects many people each and every day. Life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For some people stress is so common it is a way of life. Stress can be very harmful and or helpful. It could help motivate you to meet a deadline and perform a task under pressure. Stress can also be very harmful, such as memory problems, moodiness, aches and pains, and eating more or less. So what is stress? Stress is a normal physical response that happens when you feel threatened or upset. When you feel that you are in danger whether it is real or imaged. Your body has a response when stress occurs and it is a way of actually protecting you. Many times, stress helps people stay more focussed and energetic. Although, there is a point where stress can be very harmful and causes damage to your health in many aspects. The way you respond to stress usually depends on the person. Some people get very nervous when they are stressed out. This causes the “fight or flight” response to begin. This causes your brain’s sympathetic nerves signal and adrenal glands to be released, this releases a variety of chemicals which causes you to be affected many different ways. In some severe cases it may cause impair memory and learning as well as the chance of depression goes up. Your body may also respond cardiovascular which may cause your heart to beat faster and blood pressure to increase. Long term affects include, heat disease, heart attack, and stroke. According to Larry Volz in the Richmond Hypnosis Center, 7 people die from stress every 2 seconds. All the things that are included is anxiety, panic attacks, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, fears, smoking, and alcohol. Usually we think of stress as a negative experience. Although, stress is a neutral, negative, or positive affect. Stress is often caused by a job, relationship with others, challenges, or something where you need to reach a deadline. When you are stressed it is important that you get a lot of sleep. It is important to get rest to let your brain refresh and you may be less stressful that way. Some other ways you can manage stress is by setting priorities, discover new relaxation techniques, exercise, set realistic goals, and try to avoid stressful situations.
