Soaring through the air, hurdling towards the soft sand, knowing this is the time something goes wrong. Your gut is telling you to freeze time. An excruciating pain shoots like gun fire through your knee. Hearing the popping, the cracking, the tearing, as loud as your body’s cry for help. You can do nothing. Three days before sectionals trying to convince yourself that you will participate. You can not let down your relay team, this is your chance to prove yourself. In the back of your mind you know something is terribly wrong, you try to push that aside and endure the pain. Failing to get better, sectionals is heart breaking, knowing your relay team can’t compete because of you. Over three weeks you’ve visited the doctors more than you have your entire life. Each doctor claims they know what is wrong, but all agree that you haven't torn your ACL. A month later, walking to the MRI room your knee gives out like an old building slowly crumbling. Your heart drops when your doctor says you tore your ACL. The sooner you have surgery the sooner seven month recovery can start. During surgery they find a tear in the meniscus. Tearing the ACL is now considered an epidemic in the United States over 100,000 recorded incidences are reported each year (Moeller). While such a finding may be good for orthopedic doctors and surgeons, this is not good for millions of athletes’ competing these days in high intensity sports. This is especially a problem for female athletes who are two to four times more likely to tear their ACL than men (Moeller). This is one of the biggest mysteries about ACL tears is the difference between the number of injuries seen in women and men. Women tend to tear there ACL far more frequently then men. While not everyone agrees that gender itself is the source of the problem, evidence is growing that females are learning too late that participating in sports can also become the first step to ruining an active lifestyle.

It can mean losing the chance to get that scholarship for young athletes, and it can also mean the end of those million dollar paychecks for those who have gone professional. A torn ACL can result in numerous surgeries, months of vigorous exercise and rehabilitation, and a sufficient amount of pain. It requires complete patience, as pushing too hard can result in further, more painful injuries. Even after all that, an athlete is not guaranteed he or she will ever be able to play sports again. Amanda was in her sophomore year of soccer season when she heard the pop of her knee that cut her season short. The next thing she knew she was at the doctor’s who told her she had an ACL tear, and wasn’t sure if she could play again. From there it was boiled down to two options. One to re-strengthen her knee through rehabilitation, physical therapy and bracing, or to undergo an ACL reconstruction surgery. Although it is costly and some may consider it frivolous, those who have encountered ACL tears should receive the reconstruction surgery instead of attending rehabilitation for the damage to their knee, because it dramatically lessens the chances of meniscal injuries and osteoarthritis occurring later and allows the patient to return back to their sport or physical activity with better knee mobility and less pain in a timely manner.
These types of injuries could take upwards to eighteen months to return to playing condition, and in this time an athlete will often fall behind in the sport that they love. This often causes the athlete to quit the sport they once loved because they can no longer truly compete amongst their peers. A 16-year-old, female high school soccer player, Lindsey Robinson, tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a soccer game. Interestingly, she was not the only one in her team who injured her ACL, but several of her teammates have torn the same ligament as well during the soccer season. Lephart (2002) found that women involved in physical activity are more susceptible to acquiring the ACL injuries than men who are involved in the same physical activity (as cited in Ogden, 2002). According to “ACL Injury Prevention” (2004), the numbers of female ACL ruptures have increased for the past ten years. Over 1.4 million women have suffered from the ACL rupture, which is twice the rate of the previous decade.
Not only were the operations highly unsuccessful, but also these patients were no better than those whom were left untreated (12). After numerous refinements and tweaks to the surgical technique, as well as pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation, surgeons were eventually able to find a procedure that was low risk and highly dependable. An autografting procedure (taking tissue from another part of the body) is performed to substitute the torn ACL. Typically, the most common grafts are the patella tendon from the injured knee or a hamstring graft (12). Both grafts have their advantages and disadvantages, but more importantly, they have both shown to lead to a successful recovery when paired with accelerated rehabilitation. Dr. Donald Shelbourne, from the Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis, developed a rehabilitation protocol that emphasizes complete knee extension on the first postoperative day, as well as immediate weight bearing exercises, appropriate for the patient’s tolerance. Of 800 patients who experienced ACL patella tendon-bone graft reconstructive surgery (performed by one surgeon), 450 followed the accelerated program schedule, and 73 were contacted after a two-year follow up. When you try to cut and turn fast you can tear your ACL because you’re bending your knee and trying to turn at the same time and by doing that you’ll end up tearing it. You don’t have to get the surgery but without it your knee is just unusable it’ll just be flimsy and very unstable. It can tear by hyperextending it too your knee is going back and all that weight and pressure is just going to bust it. If you get chopped in football and take a blow to the knee it’ll just blow it. By hyperextending the knee you can tear more than one thing you can tear every ligament and tendon in that knee. The other ligaments like the MCL, LCL, ACL, AND PCL. When most people think of cheer, they picture girls in short skirts waving their arms around at football games. However, All Star cheerleading is much more serious and vigorous. My team practiced three hours a day, four days a week, all year round. We conditioned until we puked, we did full outs until every muscle in our bodies ached, and our coaches yelled at us until they were blue in the face. Jumping, stunting, and tumbling puts immense strain on bones and joints, so it makes sense that sports-related injuries are common. Despite the possible dangers involved with cheer, I always pushed myself to improve my skills and become a better athlete. In fact, it was at a tumbling class that I landed a full twisting layout wrong and tore my ACL and meniscus in my knee. The recovery time for this type of injury is usually around half a year, so unfortunately I was going to be out for the whole season. After a long discussion with my parents and coaches, who had doubts about my ability to fully and rapidly return to health, I decided that the best option for me was to step away from competitive cheer for a while and focus on my
I got to lightly start running to build up where I needed to be for the season. My first two weeks of running consisted of two minute runs and two minute walks. As I was getting back into the running I started noticing pain in my knee. I just figured that since I hadn’t used my legs for running in so long, my knee just wasn’t used to all the pounding yet. Of course I kept running on it because, like I said, I thought it was normal. I had a follow up MRI appointment for my leg to make sure that everything had healed up correctly before I started running cross country meets. My results came back the day after I got my MRI with another stress fracture in my upper tibia by my knee. The doctor said that I would need to be on crutches for four weeks and out for six to eight weeks, which meant probably the whole cross country season.
