In 1984, an American Airlines flight was hijacked by Ishmael Labeet so he could escape prosecution from the U.S government. This movie, The Skyjacker’s Tale, is a documentary about this incident, from both the criminal’s perspective as well as the law’s perspective. This 1h 15m long documentary was directed by Jamie Kastner and released in 2017 in the U.S. The purpose of this movie was to explain and educate people about Ishmael Labeet and what really happened at the Fountain Valley Massacre and eventually the 1984 American Airlines Hijacking. This movie depicts the story of Ishmael Labeet and how he escaped 8 life sentences by hijacking a plane and going to Cuba. He tells the story from his perspective and the authorities also tell the story from their perspective. The movie opens with a simulated scene of how the hijacking was carried out which is very helpful for the viewer to visualize how the situation went down. Having Labeet himself talk about the hijacking and his convicted robbery and mass murder was very moving to see. The music throughout the movie was great for indicating different moods throughout the movie such as suspense, relief, and danger. The timestamps in the movie also aided in giving the viewer an idea of how fast all of this happened. One of the few weakness this movie had was the lack of expansion upon the situation of Labeet’s supposed cohorts in the Fountain Valley Murder. They were mentioned from time to time but not expanded on. In facts, we barely received their names. Another weakness was the excessive profanity throughout the movie. As a documentary, this might make it seem more authentic, but it seemed unnecessary and it makes the movie not appropriate for younger viewers which could learn a lot from The Skyjacker’s
