In 1984, an American Airlines flight was hijacked by Ishmael Labeet so he could escape prosecution from the U.S government. This movie, The Skyjacker’s Tale, is a documentary about this incident, from both the criminal’s perspective as well as the law’s perspective. This 1h 15m long documentary was directed by Jamie Kastner and released in 2017 in the U.S. The purpose of this movie was to explain and educate people about Ishmael Labeet and what really happened at the Fountain Valley Massacre and eventually the 1984 American Airlines Hijacking. This movie depicts the story of Ishmael Labeet and how he escaped 8 life sentences by hijacking a plane and going to Cuba. He tells the story from his perspective and the authorities also tell the story from their perspective. The movie opens with a simulated scene of how the hijacking was carried out which is very helpful for the viewer to visualize how the situation went down. Having Labeet himself talk about the hijacking and his convicted robbery and mass murder was very moving to see. The music throughout the movie was great for indicating different moods throughout the movie such as suspense, relief, and danger. The timestamps in the movie also aided in giving the viewer an idea of how fast all of this happened. One of the few weakness this movie had was the lack of expansion upon the situation of Labeet’s supposed cohorts in the Fountain Valley Murder. They were mentioned from time to time but not expanded on. In facts, we barely received their names. Another weakness was the excessive profanity throughout the movie. As a documentary, this might make it seem more authentic, but it seemed unnecessary and it makes the movie not appropriate for younger viewers which could learn a lot from The Skyjacker’s
The film starts with an uprising after a white storeowner kills a black teenager. This incident Highlights Prejudices. The teenager was labeled a thief because of the color of his skin and the unjustifiable murder causes racial tensions that exist as a result of the integration of the high schools.
For Conclusion, director Spielberg and writer Zusak both achieve goals of appealing to the readers pathos and logos. Director Spielberg focusing on guilt that occurs during war, and writer Zusak focusing on how courage and cawardice can be a disadvsntage or advantage based on the situatuion. A well liked fisherman named Carl Heine mysteriously turns up dead in the small island community of San Piedro Island. World War II is beginning and there is high suspicion of traitors among the islands Japanese immigrants. Kubuo Miyamoto is accused of this crime and is put on trial at a time of high prejudice. Miyamoto and Heine had been childhood friends but in their later years, their was an honorable dispute over land. Many signs pointed to Miyamoto’s guilt, but in the end, the cause of death is determined tragically accidental and Miyamoto is set free after spending three lonely, freezing, winter months in his desolate cell. A secret love affair existed between Hatsue, now Miyamoto’s wife, and Ishmael Chambers, the islands journalist when they were adolescents. They would meet in the dense shelter of the cedar forests where they would prove their lustful love for each other. Hatsue being Japanese and Ishmael being white was not only against all of societies morals, but against everything Hatsue had ever known; her entire culture and history. As tensions boil among the islands natives, the Japanese immigrants were subject to profuse searches, stripped of every priceless belonging, and deported to work camps. Among the confusion, families were torn apart left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Ishmael and Hatsue were forced apart and Ishmeal joined the army and their efforts against the Japanese. Though many years have passed, Ishmael has never healed from the heartbreak of losing Hatsue and he is still desperately in love with her.

As the blood trickled down the flight attendant’s neck, they all prayed that they wouldn’t die. A dark skined man headed toward the front of the plane to claim his next victim. He slowly pressed the cold, red blade of a knife into the pilot’s neck. Many of those who saw screamed. They all knew, then, that they would die. Passengers felt the plane take some wild turns and they realized that they had turned around. Not long after this occurred to four planes, every single passenger died. Terrorists had taken over planes in America. Four planes, nineteen terrorists, and almost 3,000 dead people later, the United States of America has been changed forever.

Overall, the score was beautiful and appropriate, adding suspense and mystery at all the right times. The sound effects added psychological flavor to the story without drawing too much attention to it.

There is a great use of camera, timing, shots and story line that are portrayed in this movie without being too overwhelming. This allows the audience to relax during the movie and just take in the scenes as a story from reality. To this day, and even still doing this paper I still come to find different aspects of the movie that I missed the previous times I have watched it.
