In high school, when I was signing up for the dormitories at The University of Oklahoma, I never questioned as to if there was any other option. To me, living in the dorms was something everybody did their freshman year of college. I came to realize however that many students decide to either commute from home, or get an apartment off of campus. I completed my freshman year and loved my dorm experience, and whenever people as my recommendation, I always tell them he dorms are the way to go. The University of Oklahoma actually implemented a policy saying that all freshmen under the age of 20 are required to live in the dorms. For numerous reasons, this Freshman Housing Policy embodies an effective campus living policy. Living on campus is the best way to become engaged in the Universities community. Research has found that students who live on-campus their freshmen year generally make better grades. They actually have a 10 to 15 percent better chance of doing well in college than students living off-campus. On top of that, students who live on campus are more likely to graduate and continue to graduate education. There are many reasons as to why living on-campus leads to a higher chance of success. Some of these reasons are the proximity to campus resources such as tutoring and the library, being surrounded by peers to form study groups, feeling more engaged in the campus and its academics, and not having to waste time commuting, leaving more time for studying and sleep. Going away to college is a great way for people to meet new friends and experience new things. Usually a setting unlike their home will help them with both of these experiences. While this may not be true for everyone, I believe everyone should try living in an area unlike his or her own. This is what develops a person intellectually and socially.
Tuition over the years have made it the struggle for students and their parent to make ends meet. The dorms cost a lot that make it payment really high. Living off campus would make life so much easier for parents and myself because the cost of the school would not cost as much as it does living in the dorms. The school should let students live off campus if they have 2 or more people living with them. If the school did let students live off campus I feel like they should be able to have room checks just like they do in the dorms. If the parents of the students let them live off campus the school should be able to let them do it too. Because really the parents of the students have more authority over the school. I feel that now that a lot of the dorms are getting broken into that it would be way safer to live off campus. That way I know that it is my responsibility if someone was to break into my house. If anything is broking into in our room even if it is locked I don’t think the school pays to get any of the stuff replaced. Students entering college for the first time become concern with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These student are now responsible on how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands from college. Students are becoming more stressful due to academic demands, social life, and work. First-year college students should receive more help from school to learn how to help themselves and become independent.
College can be a scarce transition for individuals, especially for the ones who have lived at home their whole lives. While college is said to be one of the best experiences, there are negative factors that eventually add up. I like to explore a little bit more of the campus every time I am there. Sometimes, I can make a large discovery like finding the gym. Other times, I uncovered something minor like a bathroom. There can be a lot of parties. Some of them are boring because not many people show up or there isn’t anything to do. They can also be extremely fun because there are a lot of people to hang out with. There is a large quantity of things to do such as play games with people, watch something on the TV, eat food, or just talk with people. Those factors make college an enjoyable and adventurous

There were some students who shared apartments and others who rented them by themselves. Also, while the students in the apartments had the option to pay rent monthly or per semester, we were only allowed to pay per semester in the dorms. Nevertheless, my decision to rent a dorm instead of an apartment paid off when I was first starting to live on my own was one of the best financial decisions I made because I graduated with less than $1,200 in student debt. In this way, my choice to rent did follow the pattern of life stages. Additionally, now that I am in my thirties and married and planning to have children before I am 40, our choice to purchase and own a home is following the pattern of middle life stages. However, once we become older and closer to retiring when our child or children have left the home, we plan to remain in the home and let our children return and take over the mortgage payments, since we our using the home as a homestead and would like to keep it in the family and pass it down to later
Students living on campus don’t have to worry about time because they live in the college. On the other hand, students who commute to school, have to worry about getting to class on time. Students living on campus don’t have to waste money on transportation or food since it is all covered under a plan. Unlike commuters, who aren’t covered under a plan, they have to pay more money to get to school as well as for food. Students who live on campus tend to know more people and they know more about what’s going on around campus. However, students, who commute, don’t have that advantage because they are home most of the time. Living on campus can be more beneficial than living at home in many ways.
College is an exhilarating time, especially for the students at the University of Iowa. Young adults are finally out of the house and given the freedom to do whatever, whenever. They have the option of going to new places and staying out late, all without the need of parental consent.
