The key aspect of cultural awareness is understanding the differences between people from other countries, races, beliefs and values. Individuals who are culturally aware are accepting of other cultures; they also make an effort to understand other cultures. Others will label these cultures as “incorrect” owing to the fact that they lack the understanding of cultural awareness. The purpose of cultural awareness is to be accepting and/or respectful of people from every unique background. One benefit of being culturally aware is being able to encounter adversity and uncomfortable situations with a holistic mindset. If someone is culturally aware they are more likely to understand the actions and ways of life of individuals in different cultures. Although Aibileen is aware that what the whites are doing to her and other African-Americans is wrong, she feels that she cannot do anything about it. This feeling of being trapped cannot be overcome because of the fear she has of what the whites could do to her if she ran away. This fear she possesses is from her experience of her son being killed by the white supremacy and the racist culture she is living in. The second character I chose to focus on was Hilly Holbrook, she is a member of the high-society women in Mississippi. Mrs. Hilly is ignorant of African-American culture and it is evident throughout the movie that she could not care less to learn about them. Mrs. Hilly’s outlook on the African-American community was that they were carrying multiple diseases and they held seemingly no compatibility with the whites. The story depicts the life of three friends who conspire to murder their bosses when they realize they are in the way of their happiness. There is major stereotyping of the African American people as seen through certain scenes in the movie. The Blacks are shown as the perpetrators of crime and the neighborhoods where they dwell in are referred to as ‘dangerous neighborhoods ‘ and the black’s as ‘dangerous people’. The name of the character ‘motherfucker jones’, use of word like ‘y’all’, ‘ thirty large’ and their association with murder, gives the audience the conception that the African Americans are associated with crime, murder and other immoral occupations; that all black people are illiterate and immoral. The author distinguishes white people as privileged and respectful compare to mulattos and blacks. In the racial society, white people have the right to get any high-class position in job or live any places. In the story, all white characters are noble such as Judge Straight lawyer, Doctor Green, business-man George, and former slaveholder Mrs. Tryon. Moreover, the author also states the racial distinction of whites on mulattos. For example, when Dr. Green talks to Tryon, “‘The niggers,’…, ‘are getting mighty trifling since they’ve been freed. Before the war, that boy would have been around there and back before you could say Jack Robinson; now, the lazy rascal takes his time just like a white man.’ ” (73) Additionally, in the old society, most white people often disdained and looked down on mulattos. Even though there were some whites respected colored people friendly, there were no way for colored people to stand parallel with whites’ high class positions. The story has demonstrations that Judge Straight accepted John as his assistant, Mrs. Tryon honor interviewed Rena, and George finally changed and decided to marry Rena; however, the discrimination is inevitable. For example, when Mrs. Tryon heard Rena was colored, she was disappointed. “The lady, who had been studying her as closely as good manners would permit, sighed regretfully.” (161) There, Mrs. Tryon might have a good plan for Rena, but the racial society would not accept; since Rena was a mulatto, Mrs. Tryon could not do anything to help Rena in white social life. The racial circumstance does not only apply on mulattos, but it also expresses the suffering of black people.
It is difficult to discern whether the film is attempting to garner sympathy for the oppressed black community, or reinforce stereotypes of ignorant and complacent black men and women. While the initial depictions of the black community center around the Finch’s maid, Calpurnia, the respect with which the family treats her is far from the norm. Ranging from the callous indifference of several of the white law-enforcement officers, to the blatant racism of the group of country farmers, much meaning is assumed from difference. The racism of Macon seems to stem from the Southern history of slavery.

Throughout her life as a maid she has raised seventeen white children. Aibileen tries to teach the children that she raises that the color of a person’s skin does not matter. Unfortunately, this message is often contradicted by the racism in Jackson. During the movie she works for Elizabeth Leefolt and takes care of her toddler Mae Mobley Leefolt. The death of Aibileen’s son inspires her to help Skeeter write her book about the lives of colored maids in Mississippi. Aibileen experiences many forms of social inequality throughout the movie. For instance, throughout her life, Aibileen is forced to take care other people’s children while her son is at home taking care of himself. Additionally, at the end of the movie due to her involvement in helping Skeeter write her book, Hilly falsely accuses Aibileen of stealing silverware and convinces Elizabeth to fire her. Cultural intelligence is the capability that could give insights on how to cope with multi-cultural situations and how to engage properly in intercultural interactions. It is the individual’s ability to interact effectively in culturally diverse situations (Brislin, Worthley & Macnab, 2006). In the novel we see segregation many times: when Big Ma parks the wagon the other side of the field, the different schools and different buses. Taylor does use strong and powerful language through her characters and events to portray the racism. She also had a clear structure, some may find it confusing at times, but overall it does not affect how prejudice is portrayed as events follow each other. I think that the final message of the novel, perhaps, is that survival is possible, but that there are inevitable losses along the way, and that whatever race we are should not matter. Taylor uses memorable characters and big and small events to show prejudice in 1930?s Mississippi.
Understand the meaning of culturally competent is very important. Culturally competent is understanding a person culturally diverse backgrounds and having the knowledge to understanding that person. Therefore, culturally competent counselors consider the personal and cultural context of clients when addressing informed consent to ensure an informed decision can be made (Cartwright, & Fleming, 2010). Consequently, for me it is very important to have culturally competent in counseling because I believe in respect for the rights of others and having the knowledge to better help understanding other.
Doing this allows the individual to be aware of why and how culture affect their lives and the way they interact with others from differing cultures (Quappe & Cantatore, 2003). It is this awareness that enables individuals to develop cultural intelligence, which is the understanding of how individual culture may be construed by others and how to adapt behaviours in order to improve communication. An understanding of both these concepts allows individuals to develop strategies to implement to avoid miscommunication between themselves and people of differing cultures. Ellison creates many stereotypes of African Americans of his time. He uses this to bring less informed readers to understand certain characters motives, thoughts, and reasoning. By using each personality of an African American in extremes, Ellison adds passion to the novel, a passion that would not be there if he would let individualism into his characters. Individualism, or lack there of is also significant to the novel. It supports his view of an anti-racial America, because by using stereotypes he makes his characters racial these are the characters that the Americans misunderstand and abominate.
Our world is made up of many diverse cultures. These cultures have influenced many aspects of this world that we live in today. Understanding and developing knowledge about these cultures is vitally important. Having the ability to understand other cultures will allow you to look deeper into your own cultural values.
In 1971, in Alexandria Virginia, African- Americans and whites were forced to integrate and become one at T.C. Williams High School. Them being forced to become one caused racial tension among the community. Based on a true story, the movie centers around the Titans football team, who is led by Coach Boone an African- American. But the movie is about more than just football, it’s about learning to trust and accept one another as equals. Cultural sensitivity occurs when people recognize and are aware that each country or various ethnic groups of people have their own set of experiences, beliefs, values, and language that affect their perceptions toward life. Addressing Cultural sensitivity permits people to comprehend that there are differences between cultures. Furthermore, having awareness in the differences between cultures permits a culturally competent person to communicate effectively with others that are outside of one’s realm. Some of the differences of Cultural sensitivity can be discovered while traveling outside of the country, such as through Cross-cultural sensitivity experiences. Likewise, a culture has its own norms and beliefs to how one should dress; how one should greet others, such as by referring to a significant individual by his or her first name or surname (comprehending which name should be stated first in foreign names); and/or what foods are permitted to eat or forbidden to eat or understanding what may offend a person (e.g. not accepting a home cooked meal). There are norms, taboos, cultural cues, and cultural etiquette standards that are significant to learning about one’s culture before exploring another country or while working with people who are from your country but who are part of another racial group. It takes time and patience to build a high level of Cultural sensitivity. Educating oneself with a culture’s psychology and its norms is significant toward achieving an increasing awareness toward Cultural sensitivity.
