Intro- The “A&P” by John Updike is a story where the protagonist Sammy makes an executive decision that he believes is the “non-conformist” thing to do. Unfortunately for Sammy, his romanticist & non-conforming act of quitting his job goes ignored by Queenie and her friends, and Sammy is left to face his consequence of his decision. Thesis- In the story “A&P”, John Updike illustrates how the protagonist, Sammy, immaturity and overall consequence is a result of his cynical attitude, and disrespectful personality and seemingly sexist stance. PARAGRAPH 1 Topic Sentence: Updike depicts Sammy as a teenager of the 1960s perplexed with the choice of conformity and non-conformity. Support I: He constantly refers to the shoppers as sheep, yet he is conforming to society by working where his parents want, wearing a uniform, and following store policy.
