In this essay, I will be weighing up the positives and negatives of being connected to different communities due to today’s technology, and the effect this could have on the cultures of the world.
In today’s world, the internet is a widely used utility, with a wide variety of uses. One of the biggest affordances is that it lets people communicate with people from all around the world, people who they would not normally be able to connect with. There are many platforms which allow people to do this; there is Twitter, Facebook, Email, and many more. As a collective group, people are able to change certain things in the world; an example of this is the flash mob that occurred in Spain on the thirteenth of March 2004. All our communities are evolving, and becoming different, and as technology grows, so do we. Some people see us changing as a culture, and think it is a bad thing, but I think it’s a very good thing. More people are becoming multilingual, as a result of wanting to be absorbed in different cultures, and learn about them, and as a result, we are all becoming closer as a species, because of how connected we are. We are told this technology is making us anti-social, and stopping us from living our lives, but in my opinion, it is doing the exact opposite. We do not need to be isolated from other cultures, just because we do not live near them, we are so much better off being connected, and I feel we are all so much more social, because we are able to talk to people countries away, and form friendships that would have been impossible only a few decades ago. Since we are able to become friends with many new people, this can help people actually go and experience other cultures.
