Mia Biermann Ragusky 4th hour The many difficulties Natives faced during the Westward Expansion Back in the day, the Natives were living a happy life until there was a law passed that would change the Natives life’s forever. In 1830 the president, Andrew Jackson, passed a law that solved what he called “the Indian problem.” All the tribes living in the east were forced to move from the Native Americans homeland. The Westward Expansion was tough on Natives because the Americans were harsh, the president wanted them out of the Americans territory, and that the traveling conditions were horribly dangerous. The Natives faced many hardships during their lifetime, including that the Americans were not the nicest people especially towards the Natives. “Americans and Indians held different views on what civilized” (Gold, 18). “A new religion called ghost dance spread rapidly through the tribes… cavalry men began to fire their weapons”(Gold, 41). As a deadly disease hit the traveling tribes, it began to slowly kill most of them or making them too sick to travel. The soldiers went to the Indians new land and when they were there, a deaf person accidentally fired his weapon and a massacre started. The ones who survived the ghost dance ended up being injured or dying during the shooting, because the Americans shot almost half of the Indians. The weather during the traveling was not the best because it was either really hot or really cold. The trip took a very long time and so they had to deal with the weather and diseases for quite some time. Through blood, sweat, and tears the Indians got through it all and finally got to settle down and live a happy lifestyle and not worry about the
