Video Games Personal Statement

Games are a lifelong hobby and enjoyment of mine, and as I grew up, I have begun to wonder more and more about the workings of them. I find it fascinating how art, along with storytelling and more technical fields such as programming, can come together in order to create not only a product, but an experience. Although they draw from many different fields and subjects, video games have become their own art form. They are capable not only of providing entertainment, but also of tackling complex problems in an interactive manner. The way games can influence both individuals and our society as a whole is one of the main factors which draw me to this course. I want to be able to contribute to this rapidly evolving field which can greatly impact the world we live in.
I have always believed in having as wide an education as possible. Studying humanities in high school, with heavy emphasis on modern languages such as English and French, has greatly enhanced my creative thinking skills. To me, art has always been the main medium in which I was able to bring to life my own ideas. As technology developed, along with my love for it, I became aware not only of how it influences the art world, but also of the importance that art can have in the creation of video games. As continuous improvement is the mantra of any artist, I found that digital painting was a natural follow-up to my many years of life drawing and exploring traditional media. Being part of online art communities such as DeviantART and Artstation has helped me learn from others and has taught me that criticism and feedback are invaluable to any artist. Creating an online presence has, in turn, allowed me to start working as a freelance illustrator, thus becoming familiar with deadlines.
