Have you ever wanted to know the amazing history of video games, how they started, big brand producers of consoles and the smaller consoles/arcade systems over the long years? Also, have you ever wondered about how the consoles worked? Did you know that they never even sold discs at the beginning just a programmed game console! If no than my informational text would be categorized for you. For the start of video games it wasn’t too bad. Quality was not the best for the start of the generations. The First person to make a so called “game system” was Ralph Baer and it was called Pong it was more like a HUGE arcade game but still, it is a system. That was the first ever game system ever made and it all started generation one! One cool thing about this generation was that all were made by the same person Ralph Baer and he made “The Brown Box” it was the first gaming system! That was the end of generation one contributing to the next generation. The long Generation 2 was the start of Bits and the first one was 8-bits. These were not even detailed but it is a game. This generation included a lot more popular more balanced games such as: Fairchild, 1292 advanced programmable video system, VC4000, Arcadia 2001, Magnavox Odyssey, and the Intellivision. Although there are many Arcadia and Odyssey systems there are many things about the Odyssey Systems. One really cool thing about it is it is made by Americans! It changed how we make our games instead of just buying it. One of the first color game made by the U.S. is the Odyssey 500 the first American made game with colors and the Odyssey 300 was the first game made by us with a GI chip. So, what’s the history behind the video gaming phenomenon? Video games were first presented as a patent in 1948, starting with the Cathode- Ray tube amusement device. This sparked interest among inventors of the time, even though it was not a very successful innovation (“History of Video Games”). Through the next few years, many creations came out, but none were ever really popular. In 1961, MIT students created Spacewar!. It is considered the first widely available and influential computer game. Then, in 1972, Atari was founded. They had their first widespread success with Pong the same year. This success snowballed into the arcade age, where many arcade games such as Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Space Invaders were seen in malls, movie theaters, and even grocery stores (“History of Video Games”). In 1980, Mattel created the Intellivision system. It was not very popular (Herz 16). Then, in 1982, the Colecovision debuted but still wasn’t very popular (Herz 18). Many more consoles were produced, but none were very well known, and most people preferred to just play the arcade games as opposed to buying a home console anyway. This persisted until the third generation of video game consoles. In 1985, Nintendo came out with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was bundled with Super Mario Bros and quickly became a huge success(Herz 20). During the 1980's, the video-game market became more and more popular, and the budget for the creation of video games increased as well, as more and more publishers and fans bought into the craze. Then in 1989, Sega came out with the Sega Genesis, and Nintendo responded with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Next came the Sega Saturn, and the Sony PlayStation in 1994 and 1995. Then came the Nintendo 64, in 1996 selling more than 1.
Glen was not the only teenager who became obsessed with video games during high school. Beginning in the 1970s, the United States was making huge advancements in the world of video games. The first arcade games and home video game consoles were being developed and they became extremely popular. One of the biggest companies in the video and arcade game industry during this time was Atari. In 1971, they created the very first video game arcade machine called Computer Space, and a year later they created Pong which was the first successful arcade game (Lowood).

Video games, specifically home consoles, came to the US on October 18th 1985. The NES. Most games around that time were all bright and cheerful looking games such as Mario, Kirby, Legend Of Zelda, and Pokemon a few years later on the Gameboy. But as other game developers appeared, new types of games were made. Video games were invented in the early 20th century and many children under the age of 20 were immediately drawn to it. Many video games started as arcade games, which in most cases were less than twenty-five cents. It then evolved into home consoles you can play on the TV. Today, there are handheld consoles and improved TV consoles for a better gaming experience. Many companies such as Microsoft and Sony create video games, but still have their other products (not game related).

In society’s current era of technological advancement, video games have gone a long way since they were first created. Video games in the twenty-first century are no longer just toys or junk in the lifestyles of the youth. They have become innovative inventions that not only entertain its users, but also help aid the people in both the academic field and in jobs. The influences that video games bring about in the culture of the youth today are, in fact, not the negative influences that most people think. Video games are actually this generation’s new medium for educating the youth. The information they learn are also mostly positive and useful things that they may apply in their future lives (Prensky 4). In a generation that revolves around technology and connectivity, developers and educators have already been able to produce fun and interesting games that can teach and train people. Video game developers and educators should continue to collaborate in order to create more positive, educational, and appealing games.
Video games first appeared in the early 1970's. It all started with a simple white ball bouncing back and forth on the screen. In 1986, Nintendo introduced its first line of home video game consoles. With the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) on the market, the home video gaming industry surged and immediately became popular among children. Since then, not only have video games increased in popularity, but there have been vast improvements in graphics, game play, and forms of gaming.
Many people believe that video games change people and mislead them to do bad things, such as drugs and alcohol, but it is the opposite. Gaming prevents people from such acts and actually helps to keep them away from the substances. Lots of people, mainly parents, believe that video games harm people so they try to keep their children away from them. In reality, video games make your life better. Video games can provide many benefits to your lifestyle as “numerous academic studies indicate that playing video games has many psychological and even physical benefits” (Guarini). Gaming helps stimulate the brain and advances your problem solving abilities. There are disadvantages to gaming, which is true, but the amount of benefits outweigh them by far.
