What is unconscious bias? When asked this question, many people are hesitant to respond or they may not know the answer. But, it is quite simple. Unconscious bias can be defined as biases that we have but are not fully aware of. It becomes just “something we do,” essentially, it has been normalized and it is something rooted in our brains. Many times unconscious bias can also be referred to as implicit bias. There are many ways to define what this simple phrase means but, the best definition comes from the Kirwan Institute. The Kirwan Institute describes implicit/unconscious bias as “the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner” (). Essentially, we may not know that we are being biased towards a certain person or group of people in our everyday lives. Many times this kind of behavior can find its way into the workplace and we being to make unconscious judgements about the employees that we work with on a day to day basis. With that being said, all members of society should work to defeat unconscious bias and I believe that starting with the workplace will help to make it a habit in our lives. …show more content…

After reading See No Bias by Shankar Vedantam I have learned that many people are unaware their biases. Mahzarin Banaji took a bias test, now known as the Implicit Association Test and her results stated she had a biased for whites over blacks. She didn’t understand her results because she is a minority too. She did an experiment where she had people picking from a list of unknown names. “The experiment showed how subtle cues can cause errors without people 's awareness.” Millions of people have taking the bias test and large majorities of people showed biases, even if they said they had no biases. In today’s workplace, African Americans continue to be subjected to overt discrimination. This can take the form of ethnic jokes, racial slurs and exclusionary behaviors by Euro-American co-workers and managers. Even more disturbing is the verbal abuse, calculated mistreatment and even physical threats experienced by some African Americans while on the job. African Americans have also faced overt acts such as being reassigned to lower level projects, not receiving a promotion even though they were equally qualified and receiving less wages than other employees, even less qualified new hires. The discrimination can be so pervasive that African Americans feel uneasy and threatened, demotivated and disrespected, eventually feeling forced to leave to search for other employment.

Efren Perez(2016), a professor at Vanderbilt University, defines implicit bias as “an umbrella term for a variety of attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and stereotypes that we all carry to some degree. Growing up in a very accepting and forward home, I always found myself to be free of most bias. Having been the target of some racial prejudice in the past, I always told myself that I would make sure nobody else had to feel the same way. While this may be a great way to think, it really only covers the fact that you will not have any explicit bias. What I have realized during the course of this class is that implicit bias often has a much stronger effect on us than we might think, and even the most conscious people can be affected.
According to Devine (1989), automatic processing involves the unconscious retrieval of obtained associations that develop through memory repetition; this process links with stimulus cues in the environment. The intense nature of automaticity is that an individual cannot escape or try to ignore the process (Devine, 1989). People build and enforce stereotypes through this automatic process and have no conscious control of memory retrievals. Human bodies take a lot of effort to function, but automatic processing requires little effort. People, therefore, mostly rely on automatic thinking, rather than controlled. Implicit biases lie within the unconscious mind, and influence the attitudes, stereotypes, beliefs, and relationships of human beings. These biases are unconscious and spontaneous, and are usually the result of habits, or observations based on experiences. There are several factors that contribute to implicit biases: cognitive, sociocultural, and motivational. Social categorization, which is the process in which humans classify groups of people according to correlative traits or similar characteristics, would be considered a cognitive factor.

Implicit biases have been shown to effect discrimination in medical treatment, hiring, job promotions, and criminal justice decisions. As a medical professional, knowing one's biases is important so that they do not affect the quality of a client's treatment. Though it is important to address implicit biases, it can be difficult to identify one's biases because they are subtly presented through behavior in our daily lives. Project Implicit offers evaluations that measure the strengths of association between two concepts. The results from the evaluations can help provide an insight into one's implicit biases.
I found a interesting passage from readings Andrew Altman "Discrimination" (6 page). It states that acts of direct discrimination can be unconscious in that the agent is unaware of the discriminatory motive behind them. It is plausible to think that in many societies, unconscious prejudice is a factor in a significant range of discriminatory behavior and a viable understanding of the concept of discrimination must be able to accommodate the possibility with example of literacy tests, exclude African-American case and Romanian case. The reason why I picked this paragraph is that a certain bias, stereotype or unconscious prejudice toward to some race could be a direct discrimination even if I do not intend to discriminate them. Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented. In addition there are some very important laws that deal specifically with discrimination, like the NAACP or Affirmative Action. These both will be discussed.
